We continue to make our way east, next stop the Upper Peninsula of the state of Michigan to the city of Marquette. The population was 21,355 at the 2010 census, making it the most populated city of the UP. Note: the entire UP only has a little over 311,000 residence. Marquette is a major port on Lake Superior, primarily for shipping iron ore (see picture below of train dock), and is the home of Northern Michigan University. Some 17 miles out and across the bay there is a pullout where you can see the two power plants in Marquette, the loading docks for the freighters, and the Superior Dome on NMU's campus, the largest wooden dome structure in the world!!

We got to our motel, The Brentwood, a Budget Host property. We don't stay in these very often, but brother ...

... Hemisphere , 5 miles long. Saturday morning we left overcast Winnipeg and headed south to the Emersion US border crossing into North Dakota traveling south to Grand Forks before heading east to Thief River Falls, Minnesota, onward to Duluth and into Superior, Wisconsin. I was expecting a different landscape, but it looked exactly like the prairies and I have never been on so many straight roads that you can see at least 20 kms ahead before you might come upon a slight curve. ...
