... I talked to the locals and found out the following: A Yooper is a common term for residents of the Upper Penisula of Michigan. It is derived from the initials U.P. which is pronounced you-pee. U.P. stands for Upper Peninsula, as opposed to the lower peninsula of Michigan. Yoopers make fun of Trolls. Trolls are from 'down below', referring to lower Michigan. ... us to gooseberry jam and delish oatmeal cookies! (Note: flour from Bob's Red Mill in Milwaukie is used!!!). A road sign near Houghton, MI, referenced a 390" snowfall 35 years ago, and this last winter, they were below this record by just 3"!!! Hot and muggy days were rough with no AC, so appreciated Marquette's Ford dealer who fixed us ...

... that didn't seem to matter! We had a wonderful dinner with a variety of traditional Mexican dishes. Nick and I ate this type of food . . . when we were kids . . . and had Mexican braceros from the northern states of Mexico on the farm to pick pickles (cucumbers) (bracero = manual laborer in Spanish or "one who works using his arms"). All three of the boys (Nick, Pat, and Mike) have enjoyed Mexican or Tex-Mex food every since!

... purchases, then headed for the highway--but not before we retraced our steps and stopped at a Biggby Coffee Cafe that I spotted on the way into town! It isn't a Caribou Coffee or a Starbucks, but it is OK when none of the others is available!!

Just as we were get on the highway to head toward Marquette, I spotted a Buffalo Wild Wings!! That would have been a perfect back-up plan to The Antlers last night! POOP!

... had a couple beautiful bridges across Lake Superior, but a very depressed area. Very boring drive as not a lot to see, so we wanted to get some kilometers behind us, so we drove 1,000 kms on Saturday, traveling till darkness fell at approx 9:45 pm when I saw a sign that said " watch for Moose next 35 miles", that did it and we started to look for a place, but all we saw were trees and lakes, as I began to image us sleeping at a rest stop!
