Snow Day

... to Julli's so we didn't really have to look at the menu, we usually have a burger. Today was no exception, David had the usual "Burger with Antlers", a cheeseburger with reindeer meat on the top, and Maria had a Salmon burger served in a dark rye bun with a chilli shrimp mayo. The best bit about the burger meals is that they come with about half a kilo of shoestring fries. It's always a struggle to finish them but always good to try.

... snow (do the maths).

Maria made some warm sandwiches for dinner and then David went out to the Äkäslompolo Sauna & Beer Club with Timo. Local men get to use the sauna and the ice hole between 7-8pm every Monday so they are all used to a very, very hot sauna. The ice hole, however, gives the body respite with regular dips in the freezing water (David went in 3 times). It is obligatory to also drink cold beer during the sauna just to make sure ...

Just in case we hadn't warmed up properly, the sauna was heated up too. Being a proper wood fired sauna it takes a good amount of time, and logs of wood, to bring the temperature up to about 60c.

We didn't get up until 11am this morning, not because we went to bed late or were partying. You just seem to sleep longer when there isn't much daylight. It is still night dark until about 10am and the light will be completely gone again by 3:30pm. Bearing in mind that during that time there is still dawn and dusk, it leaves very little time for actual daylight hours.

The temperatures were checked before we decided what to do today. It was -25c at cabin and down in ...

... and ski resort. It only takes about an hour to get from Venejärvi to Äkäslompolo and it was a nice drive with a beautiful clear sky albeit freezing cold outside.

Katja and Joonas had driven separately because they will probably leave before us. We met at Maria's dad's cabin in Äkäslompolo and loaded one car with all the snowboards and headed for the slopes. Normally we would park up on the Äkäslompolo side of the fell, but today ...
