... as well as the trekker. This involves engaging a pahit, who looks after the elephants and rides behind the elephant's ears. You'll either be in a howdah, a little platform on the elephant's back, or, if you're traveling economy, on the elephant's back.
Even though riding an elephant is a must do, you'll have a more intimate experience of nature if you hike. You'll want to hire a guide, at least for you're first ...
This week has been one hell of an eventful week, First on our agenda was a visit to DFID (department for international development) with the Sirutar group. These were the guys that produce the funding for Platform2, so consequently are the guys who sent us here!!!! It was really nice to see them, though at the begining they had no idea who we were!!! even so after a while, they were back in the loop and informed us a whole lot more about development in Nepal, whilst we ...
Kathmandu, Nepal bikerbrown3Firstly I have to say this, Kathmandu will be the craziest place you will ever visit in the world and everyone should check out this melting pot of culture and history because i don't think there is anywhere else on planet Earth quite like it. It's so manic and mental on so many levels you get dizzy processing the whole experience, we love it ...
Kathmandu, Nepal tec_sofie... and have a sort of a family picnic). It should be mentioned that because Kali is a goddess, all the animals that are killed are uncastrated males.
The Durbar Squares of Kathmandu, Patan, Braktipur- are all the public courtyards of the former rulers. They are full of temples and shines, bells and drums. They served both as religious sites as well as political centers, and certianly are some of the most astounding architectual achievements I have ever ...
... life. A parade of people set out through the streets singing, fireworks were set off constantly and as we sat for dinner we heard kids ging from store front to store front singing their request for money. Apparently, the festival honors the Hindu Goddess of Fortune and Wealth, Laxmi, and in order to celebrate their wealth businesses share with anyone who asks of them. Its a sort of less sweet more ...
Kathmandu, Nepal agrossma... 2 other lads in the bar at the Kathmandu Guesthouse. There was a live band playing who were not too bad. They played some classic stuff like "Paint it Black" and “Wonderwall” and an interesting version of “Smoke on the Water”. It was a really fun night and great to be with like minded western people. It transpired that they had just returned from a slightly shorter version of the trek I have just done. I wish that I had spoken to them sooner as they have gone off ...
Kathmandu, Nepal slw321... new passengers.
The roads are nuts here but I was ok until we drove by an accident where one bus hit another head on and one of them was lying on it's side, overturned off a cliff. Did I mention that there are no guard rails anywhere and as I look out my bus window, there is less than half a foot between the tires and a gazillion foot drop off a mountain? In my weakness I couldn't help but think that it would be hard for me to get out of a rolling bus, but just in ...
... in Pokhara said the same. It was either an extraordinary coincidence (the Gurkha contingent isn't that large, surely) or the truth was being stretched a little.
Our first day of trekking was about as strenuous as a lunchtime stroll around a duck pond. We merely descended a few steps and walked alongside a whitewater river for half an hour before we reached a suspension bridge and the village of Biretanti. To 'acclimatise' and because we weren't in any hurry we ...
