The real norway

... up to a waterfall on one of these mountains and I was buggered, especially since I was wearing my thermal underwear and rainclothes because it was raining and freezing. The hostel was very nice and I was lucky enough to meet another Australian in Bergen whom had the same course as I did. Leanne comes from Cairns and she is a nurse and you should hear what she has done! Everything from Antarctica to Africa to Saudi ...

Train Expedition

Unbelivable! The sun! It came out finally! It was a marvellous morning and we did not want to waste a minute. We had planned a trip to Flam two days ago and just praised for better weather.

So we set off. Ferry back to Laerdal, driving through the longest mountain tunnel (24,5 km) and onto Aurland and Flåm. We were welcomed by a huge liner full of Americans. We also wanted to find a cache ...

Soaking Wet!

In the afternoon we wanted to reach the Jostedal glacier. Just one little, tiny peek would be enough! Unfortunately, it was hidden behind the clouds and we didn´t catch a glimpse of it at all.

We encountered a local guy who answered few of our questions. He must have been amuzed as my mother and I were dressed up like Amundsen and his companions while beating the South Pole.

Jirka found ...

Visiting the UNESCO Sight

... geocache which was placed right behind the upper stone fence.

As we were hanging around the church far too long we almost missed our ferry back. We were running downhill through the orchards crazily (even the lamest amongst us :-)), but the capitain took pity on us (he was observing the road through his binoculars so he must had seen us) and waited patiently. Everyone on board was amused by our rushing embarkation. Great easygoing Norwegians!

Looking For a Shelter

... cabin´s porch as it was raining all the time we stayed there.

My mum was almost ecstatic when she found all the big and tasty mushrooms all around the cabin. Well, you should know that we - Czechs - are the biggest fans of picking mushrooms. So the first my mum cooked was a delicious mushroom ragout.

Chase this light

Up early for today's "Norway in a Nutshell" tour of the fjords. I sold some family heirlooms on Ebay and used the proceeds to buy two individual containers of yogurt for breakfast, then was off to the train station. The first leg was Bergen to Voss - not too much to see because there were several tunnels. It was funny because you'd hear the gasps of tourists when they saw something beautiful, then "awwww ...." when they ...

Fantastic, Fabulous Fjords

... to another ferry which pulled up alongside. This ferry was much slower, and we cruised along the Naerfjord, the Narrow Fjord, slowly. This fjord was voted the Number One destination of the UNESCO world heritage sites in a recent survey of some kind(beating out the Great Wall of China and the Pyramids, which is really saying something!) which hasn't helped the Norwegian ego in any way, but we were just speechless with how spectacular the scenery was ...

... and thought I saw some ducks diving only to discover that in fact they were dolphins!! Swimming about 50 meters away from us. We tried catching up with them but they had other things on their agenda, and weren't particularly interested in entertaining us. Eventually started heading back to Flåm cutting our kayaking short by a couple ...

... have big, thick, red collars with bells. The sun was shining all day so we stopped at a fjord for a swim in the cool water, invigorating, and gave us all a big lift. We weren't and hour up the road when we stopped to play in the snow. It's coming towards the end now, being summer, but some of it will never melt. It was really funny watching Lou and Lynn sliding down the slopes in their jeans. Sweet strawberries are sold from the side of the road in big punnets, we bought 3!
