Continued from previous chapter... I look at Julie. "Well?" She seems surprised I'm even asking. Obviously she hasn't been phased at all by Casey's description of the perils of mule-riding. But being Julie, she asks me, "Do you want to go? We don't have to if you don't want to." And being me, I know that Julie does want to go and that I should just face my fears and do it. "Of course I do," I tell her. We have a little break while Casey assembles the riders into groups. Even though I don't ha...
Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, United States mlloydUp at 5:30 am to catch the sunrise at 6:45 at the Grand Canyon. It was well worth the effort. We sat in the dark and saw the sun cast its amazing glow as it climbed the South Rim of the Canyon. We'd been told how beautiful it was but seeing it for yourself is amazing. We traveled around the South Rim and stopped several times to see different views. The one ...
Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, United States lindasgibbons... first hot cooked breakfast of the tour. Bacon - yum :) Headed to the airport but when we got there we were told that the winds were to much and maybe later in the day. We were all gutted as we missed the ballooning and now the Heli. So got back to the hotel and went to the internet cafe to catch up on things as we had 2 hours before we had to meet everyone. Fingers crossed to go on the helicopter!!

I took some photos in the early morning sunrise, and headed out of the Valley toward Kayenta, Tuba City, and Cameron,AZ (hwy. 160 and 89), and then on hwy 64 into the south rim of the Grand Canyon. I reached the Park entrance by noon, and pulled up to the toll house. The sign told of a variety of fees for entering the Park. With my Inter-agency Senior Pass (formerly known as the Golden Eagle pass) - $10 for life! Get one ...
Tusayan, Arizona, United States r-e-m... minute walk to the express shuttle bus which would take us to the start of the Cedar Ridge walk. We opted for the ranger guided walk down into the Grand Canyon. As the shuttle bus went along and picked up more passengers, it was looking like we were massively under prepared, all the other people getting on had full on walking kit. I merely had sunglasses, a pair of old Reebok classics and a daysack.
The National Park is full of warnings about people who have been killed or ...
... to sleep for the night, Jimmy thought it best to report it to the rangers. The park rangers take these things very seriously and they tracked her down to one of the lodges where she had decided to stay the night, but failed to tell anyone. Probably not the most popular girl on tour but hey you have to have one or two to make it interesting (that last bit was non-gender specific).
The next day I went for a walk with ...
... a different viewpoint every half-mile. I say goodbye to my friend and start the trip towards the north rim.
Highway 89 is the major route between the south and north rim crossing through the west side of the Navajo Indian Reservation. Known primarily for the stunning Painted Desert it also has the Echo Cliffs, which are ...
... night was about to close in! The views over the beautiful Lake Mead were dark and menacing. Arizona turns out to be much greener than we thought and as we drove for 5.5hours to the Canyon it was only in the last few miles we finally saw a few cacti.
The canyon is just stunning – it's impossible to express the depth, the size or the scale of this vast natural phenomenon. We arrived as the sun was setting, but there wasn’t a 'sunset’ given ...
