Wellington Boots Auckland Into Touch

06/09/04 We arrived at the InterIslander ferry terminal at 9, checked in and boarded at 9.30am. After six weeks exploring the South Island it was time to head north again to catch up on anything we may have missed the first time round, and at 10am the ferry glided away along the Queen Charlotte Sound before turning right into the Tory Channel that would lead us out into the open seas of the Cook Strait. The views from the InterIslander put the Channel Ferry's white cliffs of Dover to shame as...

Wellington

We stayed in Wellington for 3 days but our holiday park was located in Hutt Valley which was about a 45 minute bus journey away on a bus that was as frequent as the 76! What we saw of Wellington was nothing to write home about and even the holiday park was one of the less impressive ones that we had stayed in. Our standard cabin was like a little prison cell, however the fridge did only cost $1.00 a day rather than the $100 that I (Keith) thought it did!

From South to North

Hi Everyone, Well it is a beautiful day in Wellington today (or should I say Lower Hutt - which is where we are actually staying just outside of Wellington). Yesterday we crossed from the South Island to the North. It was a rainy, windy day but the water was not too rough. It was quite an experience driving the car on and off the boat. There were campervans, trucks and buses all loaded on in a smallish space. Today is a bit of a layover day. We went into Wellington city this morning and had a...

America: Home of the Fatties

... how lazy we are in America and how easy it is to just take a 10 minute walk across the city. We talked about if we would continue walking places once we got home and Mari said she would try. But overall, we think we'd just go back to our own habits of driving everywhere. Afterall, in America, or in my hometown in Minnesota, if someone saw me walking to the grocery store, they would think something was wrong like my car broke down or something. We just straight up DON'T ...

Wellington

Originally scheduled for just a quick stopover, it turned out to be a spot that deserved more than just one night.  Self-proclaimed as the most cosmopolitan city in New Zealand, it took a bit of a walk to find Cuba Street, the centre of the city life.  The city proper was surprisingly dark at night...the large buildings jumped out from nowhere.  Cuba Street is a proper city square...imagine San Francisco's North Beach, Chinatown, Mission District, Haight/Ashbury ...

Random Update #1

... typically have no central heating. So we use electric heaters to keep the living room warm. We got a car as well. It is an old Mini Clubman from 1981. I love whizzing around Welly in it. Although, I don't get to drive it all that often as it is mainly used by Angie to go to work. I am still cycling in from Kelburn but some times I walk to the cable car and I am down at work in 5 mins. Our next goal now is the Wellington half-marathon on 28th of June. I hate running ...

Happy Earth Day from Kapiti Island

Hello! It is Earth Day here in New Zealand. We spent the day on Kapiti Island, which is now a nature reserve and where only 50 people a day can visit. It is about 5kms from the mainland and is about 10 kms long and 2kms wide, not very big. The land has been given back to the Maori people now but it has been a bird sanctuary since the 1800s. Before then, it was the hideout run by Te Rauparaha. He was a fierce Maori warrior chief who conquered Kapiti ...

DAY 17

... is a large observatory on top of one of the mountains here. I must just tell you about the fabulous Japanese meal we had - just scrummy! A stir fry with 10 sorts of vegetables and then another dish of vegetables in the lightest tempura. Also tempura fish and slices of nearly rare fillet steak followed by caramalised bananas with green tea ice cream (my tummy said I shouldn't have had the pud later). I was fascinated by a little oriental girl who ...

... going Whale watching and partly because I hurt my back getting out of the shower.... Doh.. Checked in at the Whale Watch centre at 12.15 and were driven around the peninsular to the port to board the boat. There was a reasonable swell which made the trip out quite interesting as we bounced and banged over the waves. Once we reached the last known area where a Sperm Whale had been sighted we stopped and waited,,, and waited... It took a while for the first one to surface but 3 hours ...
