... fans, and one avocado mascot. It was fun, but nothing too exciting. In the afternoon, we did a brief exploration of Antigua before moving on. Antigua is a nice colonial town, with cobblestone streets and older buildings.
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala kimandjohn... due to leave San Pedro, we got sick. And not just a sniffle or tickling cough, we got real sick. Sweats, chills, hallucinations, headaches, bone aches, muscles aches, nausea, vomiting. Good times.

Whether or not we had succumbed to the dreaded Swine Flu is still unclear, but during our last week in San Pedro, we shivered and sweated our way ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala cc_world_tour... until we past a guide coming out with another tour. He asked us what we were doing and we said we had paid to go in solo. About 15 minutes later, a huge Guatemala guy leaps out from behind us, extremely ****** off and in Spanish tells Alex that we need to get out immediately, etc, etc. We manage to get out of the cave to meet 4 guys waiting at the gate with machetes and knives, purely for intimidation I hoped. After a long winded and intimidating standoff, thanks to Alex and the fact we ...
semuc champey, Guatemala solskjaer20... down and we reached the main viewpoint, there was a lady selling water, and she asked us if we felt the earthquake. We thought she was joking. When we got to Antigua we found out that there actually had been an earthquake of about 6 grades. Very strong one! The lady at the hostel was actually worried about us being at the volcano at that moment. We never felt anything but probably that was what made those stones to come down the volcano.

We got back to Antigua at around ...

Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala andrewp... the minibus, we were surrounded by children selling walking sticks, with filthy clothing and snot streaked faces. We bartered a 5 year old down to 2 walking sticks for 5Q (we aren't proud), and started the steep hike up the mountain. It was tough going, with a footing of deep dust and a steep incline. As we climbed, the wind got stronger and stronger, reaching tremendous force at the top. As we neared the top of our climb, the ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala chadsteph... and didn't stop for ages! So an interesting way to wake up and it will also explain why the story about hiking up the Volcano and seeing some lava (real lava!!) might be a bit messy. it's hard to type with one finger wrapped up and having to correct all the mistakes i keep making is driving me insane :) So I arrived here a couple of nights ago now after finally leaving Mexico and heading south on a nice long 12 hour journey. Arriving in Guatemala ...
Antigua, Guatemala chalk... It wouldnt be authentic unless.... you could also hear the intense rounds of heavy amounts of fireworks and then children laughing histarically and running around. Room was a bit like a prison cell, but it worked and we were out of there pronto.Rule No 1... all transportation in Guatamala gets going early... so, matt and I were coffee filled, packs on, quetzales holding, and ready to move... but we had no idea the way the Guatamalans moved. Sayaxche, Guatemala korihahn... Plaza to pick up some road snacks and bottled water (97Q)-- an absolute necessity-- and filled the gas tank (30.40Q/gal) . We had an unsettling incident as we were driving on rain-slicked mountain roads- the car made a strange noise and we skid. Charlie quickly brought it under control and pulled us off to the shoulder. There was nothing visibly wrong and we had no indicator lights, so ...
