Six of us needed to go to Belize and we were given 3 days off school for it – so Madi, Kevin, Marsha, Kris and Zan as well as myself set off across Guatemala to Belize.

We got up at 4am to take the 5am bus to San Pedro Sula, and then two other local buses, first to the coast and then to the border (la Frontiera). We made really good time and got to the border about 9am. The scenery along the bus route was fantastic and ...

... an experience (!)…. It was just a tad windy and choppy and those of us sitting in the front on the hard seats had a rather bumpy ride. At first we laughed a lot at the splashes, the back jarring bumps, trying to take the impact in our knees by standing up as we crashed back down, and then the 'oh my god’ moments when you thought you were going to fall out as you stood up at the wrong moment and crashed down fast!!!! ... in Belize ist vergleichsweise ganz schoen teuer. Also drei mal taeglich Auswaerts essen geht ganz schoen ins Geld. Aber wir sind ja gute Koeche, und ich schleppe ja sowieso eine riesige (und vor allem schwere) Tuete mit Gewuerzen, Saucen, Oel & Essig... mit mir rum. Schwer, aber ganz schoen praktisch! Verbrachten doert drei wunderschoene Sonnentage am Meer. Ich gleiche nun den Locals hier, so bezueglich Hautfarbe meine ich... Hihihiii=)

... to the bus stop. buses here are crazy. its very different to guatemal, all flat and and the people speak english but with creole accents so u still cant always understand them or them you. its taken three days for me to stop speaking spanish to them even thought they dont tend to speak spanish. we got to the station adn looked at the sign to buy tickets which pointed to a blank space on the wall. waited half adn hour adn a bus for placencia turned up. it was abslotuely rammed adn we had ...

... site was cool though, we had our own little picnic area with straw roof and an open fire area plus we could use the camp kitchen to cook the delightful dry packet meal we had so all was good. On asking the ranger if we could go tubing in the river he proceeded to tell me that there had been a flash flood the day before so it wasn't safe but he would check, then when he saw that 7 of us would hire tubes the river became suddenly safe...what were we letting ourselves in for!! ... The water was 82 degrees. Subsequent dives were at Laughing Bird and Crawl Cayes. The walls are filled with life. Laughing Bird is a sanctuary, so be extra cautious about where your fins are. At Hopkins, a dusty little Garifuna village, we stayed at Jungle Jeanie's Resort; a 70 plus, marathon running, semi-hippy Canadian from Kelowna!
