... looked after, as well as having a meeting place. It just seems very hard to put wheels in motion. It was suggested I have a look at an NGO called Room to Read, which builds libraries for children. The website says there is one in Hikkaduwa, so i’m gonna try and check it out, but I’m not sure it is exactly the concept I have in mind. They will for sure be very interesting to speak to though.

... our first team visit to Food City. Alas it was an exciting time all round as we taught Teshani (teacher's daughter) to say "What's the craic" on the bus down. Jackson tried to have a conversion using some sinhala out of a phrase book, to which their response was they understand her more when she speaks English. So what's in store for tonight? Well after some chicken drumsticks, we are chilling in front of a DVD while covering ourselves in henna......rock on!
Hambantota, Sri Lanka carjack83... my backup excuse for when I don't quite master the technique!) The first thing I learnt was dahl, pol sambol and bringol mogul which are 3 pretty common dishes and 3 of my favourites. A lot of the further curries I have learnt, jack fruit, sweet potato, pumpkin, beans, lady fingers and mango are pretty similar in technique which is pretty good and they are not as complicated as I thought they would be. Meat curries ...
Tangalla, Tangalla, Sri Lanka salcat... for once we were in private, however i was soon pounced upon and propositioned... the guy wanted to return home with me, said he'd find me.... so if you get a knock on the door by a strange man, mum... send him packing! Visited a Wewurukannala Vihara temple - as the Lonely P states this is where Buddha meets Walt Disney! Very strange - it's a hall of horrors and has life-sized models of demons and sinners shown in gory detail ...
Tangalla, Sri Lanka limi07... fruit, vegetables and spices growing in their garden and nearby. I think they were a bit wary about my tollerance to the spices because Sri Lankan food tends to have that bit extra heat from the chilli's so I think my chilli eating competition before coming out put me in good shape for this! I have just about mastered the art of finger eating rice and curry - there does seem to be a specific technique involved! This photo is of ...
Tangalla, Sri Lanka salcat... So you may start with a full class, but by the end, you're left with 3. The team are now part of the furniture and it seems normal to have a full house. They have mainly been preparing the new classrooms (painting furniture, varnishing doors etc.). The 4 who are staying on have also been in helping with the children, who love the new faces and ask their usual round of questions (names, age, how are you ...
Hambantota, Sri Lanka carjack83... It was back down to Hambantota on Sunday afternoon, a little later than expected as the original van broke down so had to get another driver. We got back around 10pm and it was then time to start making 120 cornflake buns for the children for Mark's birthday! So today the kids were pumped full of sugar because of the buns, birthday cake and a bar of chocolate. I'm sure their parents were very pleased. The teachers planned a surprise for Mark after school, which involved ...
Hambantota, Sri Lanka carjack83Today a compromise was taken as regards the band. It was decided that the walking in 3s and playing instruments wasn;t working. So they are now in 4s and holding hands. Worked so much better! Still not perfect, but they are getting there! Only had one afterschool class this afternoon, and they learnt about the house and the different rooms in it. Decided that to try and quash the chorus of star star, that they would all get one if they ...
Hambantota, Sri Lanka markstothers... until 9pm to show up (which would have been almost 2hours). There was no sign at 9pm, so off we went like the parent's that we are armed with a torch. There's only one house key as well so we couldn't go too far incase he came from the other direction. Anyway after 5minutes, we saw him strolling up without a care in the world! We didn't think you could spend 2hours wondering in Hambantota, but apparently you can! I thought it was suppose to be the father who sat up waiting ...
