Morogoro, Morogoro, Tanzania miles1Skip the shower and head straight for the lake with my lush soap at 6:30am. Take down the thermarests and seek out a few of the holes. 4 or 5 kids come and inspect and lend a helping hand... at least they think it's helping.. I just call it getting in the way. Still nice to see their friendly faces and welcoming smiles. African children are beautiful with their flawless complexions.

Leave at 9 and drive through the beautiful countryside - dense ...
Mkombagulu, Tanzania oliveramber... a lot.... and I mean A LOT, and enjoyed some wonderful sandwiches, icecream, and cake! Yum! On Friday the NGO that we're working with here, Faraja Trust Fund, presented us with certificates thanking us for our volunteer term with them. It was really nice to see how much they appreciated our help and a great opportunity to say goodbye to some of the people we have been working with. In the afternoon we made a rather ...
Morogoro, Tanzania geassonA spectacular drive through baobab tree forests. The contrast of lush green vegetation and brick red earth was very photogenic (though I didn't take any photos). Corn, millet and sorghum mark the landscape, people wave and smile as we pass. An issue with the dinner truck meant that it was going to arrive late. This meant that I was off the hook for dinner. I organized dinner for the crew through ...
Dodoma, Tanzania jmckerricher... What was supposed to be a short chat turned into an hour long meeting as he turned out to be quite the talker, however I was very pleased with what he had to say and I think at this point in our programming it was exactly what I needed to hear. He thanked us so much for coming all the way from Canada to help out as much as we could in his country. He said that he truely appreciates it and has a genuine love for Canadians! He also mentioned the fact that some ...
Morogoro, Tanzania geasson... it on eating a bad banana but unfortunately my symptoms started to worsen. I walked home in the blistering heat for an hour (a walk that should have taken 30mins) carrying my backpack, full waterbottle, and laptop. When I got back to my homestay I collapsed on the bed and called Jess immediately to tell her my current status; nauseous, achey all over, gotten sick twice, and stomach pains. After another trip to the bathroom I was in a cab with Jess and headed to the clinic ...
Morogoro, Tanzania geasson... went especially well this week. Our Tuesday class was on debate and the discussion was awesome. Our topic was related to Youth Rights and everyone was really engaged and had something to say. The class flowed really well which made me feel better about my role as a facilitator. The Thursday session went equally as well and it was the first session that I facilitated alone! Katie got a urinary track infection and couldn't take part in programming for the second half of ...
Morogoro, Tanzania geasson... New things to see out the window always keeps me glued to the glass and oblivious of time. As soon as we passed the sign that said we were entering Mikumi domain that's when it really started to sink in that we were going on a SAFARI! Along the side of the road, before we even got to the park, we saw baboons, zebras, water buffalos, and elephants! I'm pretty sure I was freaking out with excitement and was beginning to think we had already started the safari! Fortunately I ...
Morogoro, Tanzania geassonThis morning we dined in Kisolanzo's beautiful garden. Stella, a local villager who was training on the job, served us delicious eggs (omelette and poached), sausage and fried tomatoes. Along with a basket of freshly baked bread and locally produced orange marmalade from a women's group, we also had brewed coffee, yogurt and watermelon. We couldn't believe what a treat it was to have landed in a little piece of delectable paradise! It was sprinkling with ...
Iringa, Tanzania bonthornThis weekend was my first safari experience in Tanzania, (but not my first african safari experience, went to South Africa in March05). So I went down to the southwest of Dar to Mikumi National park for a day then to Udzungu National park for some hiking and waterfall watching. Shari and I booked a budget tour with our own driver/guide, Fikiri (which incidently means "to think" in Kiswahili) drove us down to the park from Dar and we stayed at the Genesis motel, sort of like ...
