... which were very uniform in size. Reaching a breach in the rim of the crater, a wooden walkway and steps lead up on either side to allow a walk around the whole rim. There's a smaller crater at the bottom of the greater crater, presumably the site of the last eruption (roughly 3000 years ago). It was quite windy at the top, with a strong but remarkably steady strength. To everyone's relief, there were no broken bones by the time we all returned to the bus.

... and Pingvellir Parliament site amidst torrential rain...it was all part of the fun though! We ran from shelter to shelter as we explored the area, which was very beautiful. We walked through the rift itself, with giant volcanic rock slabs breaching up on either side of us, and could see the site of Iceland's first parliament - Alpingi. The area has been in use since 930 AD, and the whole area is of incredible cultural and historical significance to the Icelandic people. ...

... continued on to the visitor centre for lunch. Food in Iceland is expensive when compared with eating out in Canada but at least the quality is good. We followed lunch with more enormous slices of cake before getting back on the bus to make the short trip to Geysir.

Well in our quest to see the elusive northern lights for real, rather than their Harpa simulacrum, after the concert we bundled back into our little Yaris and, retracing our tire treads, drove about an hour back out to Žingvellir Park, where there is a total absence of terrestrial lights. ... s pretty much one big pothole filled with hundreds of small potholes. Quite possibly one of the most interesting roads I have ever travelled.

We chose to park in the designated parking area as we were unable to heed the warnings of other travelers. And, before really discussing the hike, there are a few other considerations to take before doing this hike. (1) It is out in the middle of no where; there are no bathrooms (2) don't even think about doing ...
