... control measure (hint: it’s not working!) If you even accidentally drive into the area, much less park there, they will photo your car and send you a hefty bill! Did we mention that drivers here seem to all have the same death wish?

Our first stop was the Bargello Museum, which is home to works by Donatello and Michelangelo, among others. Then off to the Galleria Academia .Yes, we went to an Accademia in Venice, too. It does get confusing! The ...

... of you who are not Reddingites, Calatrava designed the world famous Sundial Bridge in Redding, CA. Michele had read about the Venice bridge and found that it was just as plagued by delays and cost over-runs as the Redding project. Michele describes herself as the only resident of Redding who hates the bridge, more for its cost than its beauty.

Next, we toured the Peggy Guggenheim Museum. This wealthy American woman, who lived in an palatial home on the Grand Canal, had two great loves: her dogs and modern art. After her death, her ...

Venice, Day One

... 8217;clock,” then added, “but maybe seven thirty, or maybe seven, depending on the people.” We weren’t at all sure what to expect at six thirty, but he was there.
Oh, did we mention that it rained most of the day? We were prepared and only came home with wet shoes. Since most of Venice was under over 3 feet water just a week ago, we considered ourselves very lucky.

Tomorrow, San Marco and (hopefully) dry weather.

... find. Then it started raining, I mean it IS Venice, so what more could you expect? But it wasn’t bad, so (after I bought an umbrella) we kept walking.

The next day was spent the same way, though without Steve. We had a lot of fun and enjoyed tracking down gondolas. We found a great little place that sold yummy ham and cheese Paninis, and had a surprisingly wonderful few days. Next stop: Rome.

Feets Don't Fail Me Now!

... pizza on the way and bottled water and I bought a dress along the way which I wore and placed my jeans and top in a bag. Everyone is thrilled there's no more humidity, but it's still very hot. Guess I'm a bit spoiled living in San Diego where everyday is perfect. Also took some friendly advice and bought a mask. You can pay up to 300 euros, but I found one I liked quite nicely for 15. We decided at the last minute, or I ...

... out the city. We ate lunch and then took at tour of Doge's Palace and St. Mark's Basilica with a local guide. This was absolutely amazing seeing and walking through architecture from the 1300's. After a few minutes of rest we boarded a Gondola ride though the city taking in the antiquity of our ancestors. To top off a lovely day we had dinner at Antico Martin where we continued to enjoy the food and expand our wine list.

Venice - Summer 2002

I travelled throughout Italy with my mother and stepfather in Summer 2002. We travelled with ABC Tours, which arranged our transportation, several guided tours and some of our meals. During the last leg of our trip in Florence, we made a day trip to Venice. Although my ability to enjoy Venice was limited due to a stomach illness, the highlights of our trip were the canals and the Piazza San Marco.

... with side buildings, grassy courtyards, a convent, and tomb slabs lining much of the walkways. We got to the ocean and walked along it on this path maybe four feet wide and out over the water in some cases. We knew that the path would dead-end on us when we had to walk under a ladder, but we got over that pretty quick. We had lunch at this restaurant that had a good fan going and sat inside. We had the place to ourselves, so we could speak openly ...

We also took the vaparetto to Murano. The island is full of glass-blowing studios that had to leave Venice because they were fearful of a fire burning down the city. Right when we got off the boat, we were herded to a studio to ...
