Our next stop was Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin which is the county seat of Door County. Door County is roughly 300 miles of coastline stretching along the eastern Lake Michigan side and the western Green Bay side of the peninsula islands with quaint New England type towns and communities. It is home to 3 state parks, 8 county parks, many local parks and 15 natural areas and preserves. A truly beautiful place to visit. I love to travel through the countryside and ...

... of Door County. We went from one quaint seaside town to another. From Sturgeon Bay to Carlsville, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Ephraim, Sister Bay, Ellison Bay, and at the tip of the peninsula- Gill's Point. Robin and Steve were our personal tour guides. Stopped in Sister Bay for an outside waterfront lunch. Simply an amazing view. Cherry season is ...

Sounds suitably creepy for the season, doesn't it? I finally learned how Door County got it's name. Door County is a peninsula that juts up into Lake Michigan and creates, on its west side, Green Bay (of Packers fame). Off the tip of Door county is an island, Washington Island. Apparently the waters between the peninsula and the island are particularly treacherous and home to many a shipwreck. This earned it the moniker 'port des mortes', or Death's Door, ...
