day 8 (93 miles)

today was an exciting day because we crossed our first state line! although we would have to cross back into washington in order to pick up the highway, we camped just across the idaho border for the evening. today's ride was the longest to date, both for me and the trip. i was a bad boy and didn't train with super-long distances... the ride started off with some fairly tough rolling hills as we pedaled over a range of hills. it wasn't a mountain pass, but ...

Goodbye, Washington!

Total miles to date: 10,150 On Tuesday, May 6, Don and Loretta made it into Idaho and stopped just east of Priest River. They went back to Newport to stay for the night at The Walden House Bed and Breakfast (www.thewaldenhouse.com), where they were hosted by Farren and Jolene Walden. From their website: "The Walden House ...

Solar World

Beautiful weather today; high temps in the upper 60's. Made 30 miles today. Backtracked to the northern outskirts of Spokane to stay at Solar World Estates, at the intersection of Highways 2 and 395, which, according to their website, "provides temporary ...

Into the woods

I've done it, the 7-hour Greyhound trip-of-doom everyone grimaces about. Well, it wasn't necessarily the time of my life, but I really didn't mind the open scenery - quite a shock after coming out of rush-hour Seattle. So, here I am at the "RANCH" for a short stay. Horses, dogs, cats: you name it, they have it. Well, not the farm animals, just the "comfort animals" that greet you ...

Priest Lake and On To Chewelah, Washington

... Lake "Thorofare" up to Upper Priest Lake. This was really our first chance to try out the kayak cart we had gotten earlier in the summer. Jeff hooked it up and separately towed each boat down the 1/3 mile portage path to the water. The water was calm and clear and Deb saw a number of two-foot trout from the boat as we paddled the placid 40 foot wide creek. The paddle to Upper Priest Lake was a good deal shorter than we expected, so we ...

Glacier Park through Sandpoint to Priest Lake, ID

... the hype about the area, we found the development haphazard, the scenery so-so, and the downtown area struggling for an unifying theme. We camped at a Corps of Engineers site about 3 miles from town, had a mediocre dinner at the Powerhouse restaurant in Sandpoint, and decided to head on out the next day, for Priest Lake. Deb's Aunt and Uncle, Jim and Kathy Tompkins, had taken a trip earlier in the summer that included paddling up to ...

Day 6

Drove to Many Glacier area about 20 miles away and it was gorgeous. That is where the main travelogue picture was taken upon entering the park that way. This is the area to stay in to see bear and sheep, I wish we had known that before because we didn't stay here. Next time! We did 2 of the hikes that started at Swiftwater Hotel, Red Lake Falls and Iceberg Lake. Both were beautiful hikes. Red Lake Falls was about 5 ...

Day 4

... we got out of there. We finally arrived at East Glacier only to find that I messed up and we were staying at Saint Mary which ended up being where I wanted to stay in the beginning. We stayed and a hotel right at the edge of town within walking distance of the worlds best pie cafe. We ended up eating pie quite a few times. We just chilled the rest of the day.

Going-to-the-Sun

I missed sunrise but got early morning pictures of St Mary Lake and the mountains. I left around 9am and stopped for more pics at Sun Point and Goose Hollow. Drove the "Going-to-the-Sun" road over Logan Pass where I stopped at the visitor center. I hiked to Hidden Lake from there. Saw some mountain goats along the way. There were quite a few people around the ...

to Glacier

I woke up a little hurting after the late night drinking and dancing. Had breakfast and took off from Banff about 10:30am. Drove through Calgary (didn't stop) and to the border. The guy at customs was searching all through my car. He must've thought I had drugs or something. I entered Glacier National Park at the Many Glacier entrance. There weren't many people up that way. I ...
