... and I are trying everything we can not to barf. They are not sweet; they are sour and leave your mouth tasting worse than ass. We are now stuck with a situation. We must eat the "treats" as to not offend Jay but we refuse to eat said treat. Mr. Bean comes to mind (the steak tartar sketch, a classic) and we start finding different ways to get rid of the unsavories without eating them. I place them in my mouth and spit them out the window ...

The Desert, and a sore arse..

... we were told when we booked the safari that the jeep collects you from the dunes in the morning so there we were ready to head back in comfort.. but oh no.. the camel men they had other plans, another full day of riding was planned for us, when they told us this I think the look on our faces, or the grimace of pain I should say made them reconsider this and so we only had to do another couple of hours or so of riding, I think liposuction would be more pleasant than the ...

Chilling with the camels

We've been in Jaisalmer for three days and we've been chilling since we've arrived. The place is fab but absolutely boiling. We spent most of looking for an ATM that worked as we had just 2.60 pounds left. We managed to buy two bottles of water and some lunch to keep us going but basically the network connection to the banks were down and we couldn't get cash anywhere. We returned to one ATM where we had already tried twice that day and thankfully it worked and we ...

... that was not edible and I sent it back-strike 3. As we sat in the restaurant, with 3 days of this hotel looming in front of us, we made a spontaneous decision-no way. We went back to the room and called our tour office and said that we had decided to return early to Jodhpur. We made a quick mid-course change and decided to go out and see what we could see this afternoon as the sun went down, Tomorrow we would see the fort (the major ...

Alone At Last...

... ki Haveli. Havelis are old sandstone homes that are very delicately and elaborately carved. This haveli was the largest in Jaisalmer. Turns out the Jain religion also had some wealthy merchants among the followers. I opted not to go inside and just enjoy the architecture from outside. While I was walking back to the fort from the haveli. I ran into a cow (literally). I turned a corner and their was a cow walking towards me. I moved to the side of the ...

... expect from some badly behaved camels. On the downside he did have wild hairy eyebrows, a propensity to stick out his massive tongue whilst burping and incredibly bad breath. This put me in mind of my fourth year French teacher but I'll keep her name out of this to save embarrassment. All was going very swimmingly once we set off and it really seemed like a scene from 'Lawrence of Arabia' apart from the constant mobile phone call Pilu, one of the camel ...

to Jaisalmer

... Should maybe have changed more, but this way my spending is controlled. :) Walked over to the fort and saw the stonework and the sights from the top. Walked through the narrow streets with many shops and markets. Were herded into yet another "special" shop where the owner tried to sell bedspreads, etc. Things were beautiful, but I only got a couple scarves and three cushion covers. See aforementioned control of money. :) When we ...

... the rest of the town, built in the 12th century. The mob of rickshaw drivers at the station was the worst we have had and, after 15 hours of travel, we were not in the mood, so Jeremy shouted at some of them. He also told a man on the train to stop staring and go away. Which he did. Got a lift to a hotel and were pestered to go on a camel safari (which is THE thing to do in Jaisalmer). We got a room for free if we went with this hotel and were too exhausted to shop around so ...

Camel Safari

... city. But fort aside, the highlight was a camel safari into the Thar desert. Mid afternoon we headed about 30km out by jeep where we met our camels. We were all so excited, the camels were all resting, lying on the stomachs. Each camel seemed to have a different personality. Some gruff, some calm each with adorable facial expressions. I was asked to hop on a large camel, then with a casual instruction to lean back ...

... with my backpack and fall over from the massive weight of it, teach me the word for 'a little' (tora tora) as I practise my Hindi/Urdu/Bengali on them, and serve us delicious and cheap food on the rooftop restaurant with the stunning view past the fort. Jaisalmer is a city aware of it's beauty. The men are beautiful and lethargic, the women are desert-jewel colours of yellow, orange, red and hot pink, and the restaurants serve dishes overflowing with desert-peas and tomatoes ...
