Tok, Alaska, United States pamericasAfter packing up camp we were on the road to Tangle Lakes. In Alaska they have a book called The Milepost so you can look at landmarks along the road. It makes the drive really interesting. We saw some more beautiful scenery and a moose swimming across a lake with it's calf! We also saw more ...
Tangle Lake, Alaska, United States usa2009aswm... stop. From Glennallen you travel northeast on the Tok Cutoff, kind of an extension of the Glenn Highway. At Tok you then turn east on the Alaska Highway.
We arrived at the ranger station a little before lunch, unhitched, and turned the coach around at the dead end. We visited with the ranger for a while checking on the status of Nebesna Road. We knew there were some stream fords to cross and wanted to be ...
Tok, Alaska, United States 2jgstl... to Root Glacier. The trail climbed continuously. We stopped for the outhouses, because there are no facilities on the glacier. Then it was a steep path down, up and over the glacier's lateral moraine.

We put on our cramp-ons and Nathan showed us how to walk in them. The initial climb was quite steep, requiring a duck walk and digging in the spikes. We then trekked around learning about various glacial ...
Kenny Lake, Alaska, United States 2jgstl... a normal one. We visited the North Pole shop, bought souvenirs, took pictures, just what normal tourists would do. We decided to stay at copper center lodge, the only lodging place in town, well, not actually a town, only a few houses, no more than twenty in sight. The room is small since the lodge is old.
Copper Center, Alaska, United States mrdubyWhen we woke up the weather had not gotten any better; still cold and rainy. The weather had left a little present, though: a blanket of fresh snow on the tops of the mountains. After a muffin and some hot tea for breakfast, we headed out into the cold to explore the area. We drove up the Denali Highway west from Paxson. It would over the tundra at the base of the Alaska Range. It was beautiful ...
Paxson, Alaska, United States lilikoi78I ate my ice cream as we drove north out of town to the Alaska Pipeline viewing area. You could walk right up to the pipeline and check out some displays on how it worked. Rick really liked it. I guess he doesn't get to see that side of his job very often. After our informative visit to the pipeline, we started heading back south. Just to the southeast of Fairbanks we drove through the little town of ...
Paxson, Alaska, United States lilikoi78... so there’s still that to do on the drive from Delta Junction. It’s a theme town, of course, built on the legend of Santa Claus, and one of the big thrills is mailing a letter from there with the ensuing postmark. Other than that it’s mostly just souvenir junk, the kind that they sell in gift shows the world over, and year-round Christmas stuff.
Delta Junction, Alaska, United States hardiekPalmer is also where the main highway eastward veers off, so I take that to Glenallen, before heading north again to Delta Junction. The next day is one long drive through the vastness and openness of Alaska. There's really nothing quite like it, and the idea that it’s all tundra and nothingness could not be farther from the truth. That part of Alaska ...
Glennallen, Alaska, United States hardiekI know I'm a little behind with the 'Pod, but I've been rather busy hanging out with friends - and their babies - drinking free beer on the east coast of the US instead of spending my evenings as a loser backpacker squirreled away in an Asian internet café trying not to notice the greasy mustachioed Germans playing video games with young boys. OK where was I? Oh yes, Alaska. The 49th State. The Last Frontier. That Great Big State Way Up There Past Canada Much ...
