The Alaskan Wilderness awaits ...

Today, we took the great Alaskan Railroad train to Denali National Park. Check in was 7.15 for an 8.15 departure. It took 7 and a half hours to arrive at the park entrance. There is only bus a day that goes into the wilderness - no other vehicles are allowed in the park - so we stayed overnight at Denali Cabins at the Park Entrance. The train ride …

Got up early this AM, last minute breakfast of oatmeal & tea, checked out of hotel, and shuttled by 5-minute drive to the iconic Historic Alaska Railroad Depot in Anchorage.

Very early start to catch the bus for our Denali Backcountry Adventure. This bus tour travels the full length of the Park Road, all 92miles of it, as far as the Denali Backcountry Cabins where you get lunch, and either a nature tour or the opportunity to go gold panning.

There really are no words to describe how amazing the scenery was on …

After breakfast at the cabins, the usual cereal and pastries, we headed into the visitor centre to get information on some of the walks we could around the park.

We chose 2 that were supposed to be long enough to keep us busy until lunchtime, however we must walk alot faster than the estimate as we were done after 1.5hours, so after …

We set out early to pick up the rental car from the airport and hit the road north for Denali.

We saw some amazing scenery along the way and stopped lots to take pictures and just gaze.

We made out official pit stop in Talkeetna as it was't too far off the main road. We walked down to the river and took some photos of Denali/Mt …

    A reasonable overnight stop

Given that we had to stay overnight at the entrance to Denali Park, this was a reasonable overnight stop. The room was pretty basic though and on the cold side too. Breakfast was very simple - not really worth the additional $11 charge, but there was no place else to go. Charging for hot coffee seemed mean on a cold and frosty morning when there was no kettle in the room. The lunch box for the bus trip was not worth the additional $14 either.

    The Prey restaurant was OK.

Cabins with running water and electricity but not sure if heated well as it got cold at night. Comfortable. Has onsite restaurant. Also, has a lounge cabin area with board games, comfy old armchairs with moose and caribou antlers scattered around and two TVs.
