Day 60 Wednesday 2nd September Taupo
This morning we spent an hour or so enjoying the thermal pools at de Bretts. A well presented spa with private pools, several lrge public spools and spas and a chlorinted water slide pool.

We then had a look around the town and along the Waikato River including some time watching a very high bungy jump.
Great drive out past Wairakei Thermal Steam Field wh...

Thermal Taupo

After a week in New Zealand, Paul and I have come to the same conclusion--we like New Zealand a lot better than Australia. This may come as a surprise to many Americans who, like ourselves, thought of Australia and New Zealand as the same country. As much as we liked Australia, we have come to realize that it is very different from New Zealand. It's hard to put your finger on what the difference is. I think for me, it's partly the landscape (Australia is the driest continent, while New Zealan...

The Tongariro Crossing

Over the past 6 weeks we have been spoilt rotten at family and friendīs homes. It feels a little strange to realise that John and I are now travelling alone. We pick up a Japanese hire car and plenty of inspiration from Jawad, and head off for a couple of days touring around the north island of New Zealand. The drive seems to take forever down freeways and countryside that remind me of roads in the UK. Eventually our surroundings begin to look a little abnormal as we see steam rising from the...

Volcanoes and Holy Smoking Holes

Departed the campsite pretty late and headed down the road for the buried village, the site of a village which was completely buried by the eruption of Mt Tarawera in 1886. It seems this village was a tourist hub back then as people travelled from around the world to visit the white and pink terraces (silica terraces which formed on the sides of the volcano). The eruption of the volcano itself was pretty benign, but it caused a further eruption under the lake which evaporated and threw boilin...

Return to the North Island

We returned back into the North Island yesterday and after a stop over along the way, made it to Lake Taupo today. After leaving Nelson we had a nights stop over in Glenorchy and went kayaking on the longest lake in New Zealand from the tiny village of Kinlough. Both Glenorchy and Kinlough are peaceful, tiny villages surrounded by scenic spots used in the filming of Lord of the Rings, so ...

From the South to the North

... some nice views and some very blue and green pools along the way. Overall, I would highly rate the walk, but it was challenging. Six and a half hours, 12 miles, and 900m in elevation climbed later, I am pooped. So I must say goodbye now to recharge these batteries of mine and welcome the new adventures that are coming. Next stop, the Waitomo and King Country! P.S. I'm running out of time on the internet, so I will add photos in a couple days. Check again in a few!

Tongariro National Park and Lake Taupo

... he calls my cell phone explaining that there was a mix up with the tongariro shuttle bus and he missed the connecting bus in Turangi. luckily, the hostel owner took pity on him and drove him to taupo, going two hours out of his way so that we could still spend x-mas together. that's the kiwi way -- if something doesn't work out, don't worry about it too much as someone will figure out a solution! the whole thing with the shuttle vans and delays started to clue us ...

On to Taupo!

... a very good exhibit explaining the history of the town. Then it started to rain, so I parted ways with my UK friend and headed to an internet cafe to make a few calls/emails. Later on, after arriving back at the hostel, I ran into a girl that I met a few days earlier who is from the UK. Seven or eight of us were going out to the pub, so I invited her along. On a side note, its funny how often peoples paths cross while traveling ...

Oops I just fell out of a plane

... and luckily the weather was going to change so we had to change our plans which meant that we would not be spending the day with Darren tomorrow anymore!!! he was fully gutted though and had a right go at me, Tara, Rhiannon, and Lisa about us leaving him on his own, doing the Huka jet... hahaha loser! We had drinks in the evening in some Irish bar then headed back to the hostel for a very early night - as we had a very early start in the morning. xxx
