Star Spangled Banner - Mutton Bustin

... and to thank the veterans at the fair and finally that we should show our support by singing the “Star Spangled Banner" and with that a recorded version of America’s national anthem shook through the speakers with such tear-jerking emotion that everyone around us (with exception to those unable to and the Priest family) stood and placed their hands on their hearts and belted along with our 'Whitney Houston” singer. Now I think it is fair to say you cannot ...

"loping" in the mountains

Most of the adults participated in the adult test – to see whether we could go on the adult horse ride. We all failed – it was hysterical. Ian and I were cantering English style on a western horse and it was utterly wrong. We couldn't understand the reaction of the horse and realised that the moves we were told to do in the UK gave out a different message. Additionally these horses are trail horses and hated being in the ring so ...

Don't bother with riding lessons in the UK!

We were up early to see the horses being driven from the mountain to the valley. It was a great sight with the horses galloping by (loping is the word over her) being herded by the wranglers, then off for breakfast.

The first thing to do this morning was to get the boots and chaps sorted out. Kids first and Edie was given a fantastic pair of sparkly pink riding boots (not quite boy but she loved them). The kids looked really cute with their ...

Richard Manning on Parade

... fifty degrees of drizzle, and rolled our eyes, and laughed, and talked of other things. Manning is a musician and audiophile, and he owns and runs a high-end stereo shop in town. He's a Michigan boy from Alpena. He started out as a journalist taking on the timber industry in Montana. At last the parade ended. The crowd shuffled past, but they were not as noisy as the marching bands, and so we could shoot. And that lasted maybe 30 ...

Catching Our Breath

... dining car and endless hours to read and talk and think of questions for our next interview. And much was different...the crying baby (Sally managed to get us moved to another car for the second night), the Burl Ives wannabe with the awful voice and guitar entertaining the crowd in the lounge car, the endless miles through North Dakota and eastern Montana. As we pulled out of Union Station, I noticed the flip side of the approach to Chicago from the south: the northern burbs, so ...
