... through hell and I was just waiting for Lucifer to pop out. Right when the word Lucifer came out of my mouth, the biggest fox I have ever seen ran across the street, stopped in the middle of the road, and glared at Ash and I. It was abnormally, eerily, mutantily large. We both freaked out and even to this day I know Ive seen the devil and he resides in the woods of Iron River, WI!
Iron River, Wisconsin, United States lindsey.martin... none have docks nor boats in front of them (fearing damage from severe storms, I suppose).
Places we Visited:
- Glensheen Historic Estate – Built by a self taught lawyer and former Solicitor General of Minnesota for a cost of $850k in 1905 (today’s equivalent of $30 million), it overlooks the north shore of Lake Superior. The house has 14 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, 15 fireplaces and is a 27,000 sq ft ...

But for us most of the entertainment came at the hostel we stayed at, some 18km east of the city. The couple that run it were warm and friendly, and had set their home up as a hostel in a commune like way. We only stayed 2 nights, we decided to take a room for the first and tent up on the lawn the second night. This proved to be a ...
... leaves, but Julie hates thistle with a passion. She’s trying to pull up every single thistle plant on the property, which will take, I estimate, about 107 years. My nemesis is the reed canary grass. It’s totally invasive, gradually turning the soil into mats of roots so that nothing else can grow. We have a lot of it already, and it’s spreading into the native grasses. Thistle competes with the reed canary grass on our “back 40” (more ...

... and monuments, and unlike the Canadians they didn’t fleece us for an entry fee, and parking was free. A bit of a moan here…. In Canada we purchased a National parks pass for something like $145 CDN, and that gives us access to all the parks, but there is a catch that those tricky Canucks don’t tell you, often there are additional parking charges, which really offends my sense of fairness. End of moan!!!
Now the road heading south along the shores of lake superior ...
We wound our way along the lakeshore where the cliffs are slowly diminishing from the Candian grandeur size, while passing quaint towns where we scooped up some more fresh and smoked Whitefish for dinner and snacks. Temperance River was the first State Park actually on Lake Superior, mainly because the road winds ...
Temperance River State Park, Minnesota, United States tombuttleOn Saturday the 5th we headed to Grand Marais on the north shore of lake Superior. This reminds me so much of the Northeast. I have to keep reminding myself that we are not in New England. You'll see what I mean by the photos--especially of the bay. We were going to go sea (lake) kayaking yesterday, but when we awoke it was 57 degreees! No way could I imagine myself in 38 degree water and that cold air! So Paul will say I chickened out....I say I was trying ...

Jeff says no problem catch a fish and we will go. I'm scared but I'm fishing! We are there for what seems like an hour but I don't even think it was that long. I am getting bites, and Jeff has caught two small ones. All the time we are standing under this big wire fishing in the thunder. Finally Jeff says, "Okay maybe we should go now." I have been ready to go since we got ...
