A great place to start and to end your South Island experience

A great place to stay. A stone's throw from the airport with a shopping village close by so an ideal spot to start from and to finish. Great facilities.

Strange mix of a sort of corporate image with trying to attract families. Ok as a place to rest your head, but absolutely no soul. And too many smokers!

    Very convenient

Stayed in a 6-berth motorhome for a night, getting ready to depart the next day for a three week trip. Found everything just as we needed - hot showers (free), great kitchen, power for the van and plenty of space. Not much character, but then we weren't looking for that.

    Great stay, but...

The hotel was nice, with lots of space, but when we got there they seemed to be a little disorganized with who gets what room. My parents walked into what they though was their room (using a key, of course) and saw dirty towels. When they went ot check on it, someone earlier had given their room away. They worked everything out but it took around an hour and a half to do so. Then my daughter decided to take a shower, hopped in, and then realized the soap dispenser was completely empty. Overall, it was a nice stay...I would stay again, but I hope they work some of the kinks out.

Pleasant low key place to begin and end a road trip around NZ South Island. We found the location perfect and a great way to meet other travelers on the road.

A day to chill & explore the earthquake zone!

Today has amazed me.... Im so pleased we decided not to drive anywhere today, well no major drives anyway, just into town! But wow what a town a real eye opener today... Woke up chilled and in no rush to go anywhere as we knew we were here for a few days so could properly chill... Let the mad shower block rush continue ( always manic as most people …

    Day 2 in Christchurch

Well, the wifi here is a joke. $NZ7 for 24 hours. But the link drops every few minutes, so it's pretty unusable. Told reception, and they told us our unit had the strongest signal. Pity the others. Eventually they gave us another 24 hours for just $2. Still kept dropping though.

We offered to take Chris and Pohiri out for dinner tonight …

Christchurch - our last stop in NZ

A travel blog entry by sw19mike on Feb 15, 2014

I'm up first as usual. After a sluice, I look for the dining room. I know it's somewhere because I saw it last night. Finally, someone takes pity on me and guides me there. A girl has set the table and is now brewing coffee. Yum. I chat to her. She's not the owner's daughter, just someone who helps out. The owner's daughter walks in. I chat to her …

A short and very pretty trip back (downhill) to the coast and Christchurch this morning . About 130 kms I think.
The sun was on the hills as we left and the Waiau River was looking very pretty.

The sun shone all the way until we arrived here and now it is raining and colder than it's been the whole month. Although there have been many …

We left the van and caught the blue metro bus to the city. We weren't really prepared for the enormity of the earthquake devastation and the randomness of damage. Some structures such as multistorey car parks and building complexes appeared virtually unscathed from our view but were fenced and abandoned and apparently waiting for demolition.
