Chobe National Park, Botswana
January 10th, 2006, I started my adventure by taking multiple planes (Chicago-London-Johannesburg-Maun-Sandi be Lodge) the total time it took to get to my first destination was 30 hours. The last plane was an 8 seated prop plane. By the way the plane looked I would be happy to arrive in one piece. It was leaking water on the inside of the plane. This is where I met my fellow travelers, two couples from Germany and 2 girls for Switzerland. One of which, Coni, spoke enough English to hold a con...
Chobe National Park, Botswana heynurse... had to move quickly if we wanted to see some animals. Botswana is famous for its super-tall elephants and we sure did see a lot of them. It was a nice park but nowhere near the amount of wildlife as in other parks. Especially the Serengeti or in the Ngongonoro Crater. But I still enjoy them. We did see a family of lions that had two little cubs but we could only see them for a very short time before they disappeared into the bush never to be seen ...
Chobe National Park, Botswana travel_lover87... dinner and campfire. The night was very clear and we spent a great night stargazing and enjoying the sounds of the African jungle. It was amazing to be so close to nature, although I must admit, we were all a bit worried when our bush guide warned us to go the toilet in the night in pairs. Lions will only attack if a person is walking alone. YIKES! But fortunately we all survived until the morning and headed off on our safari out of the park and towards Namibia.
Chobe National Park, Botswana caralyn... and he took off, careening around corners and overtaking smaller vehicles by taking alternate loops that had us pulling in front of them just as the two paths met up again. I wanted to woop and holler with the excitement of it; we could have been on a roller coaster, but more then anything it was the feeling of pursuit that was exciting.
When we rounded a bend we saw a dozen similar ...
... something is dead, dying or being killed! We hopped in the car and drove over where we encountered a massive elephant herd with literally 100 elephants...who were not happy! Before we knew it the elephants were on all sides of the car. There was lots of trumpeting (even by the little babies!) and some of them started to run away up a hill to our left. Thank God! We think that there were some lions desperate for ...
Chobe National Park, Botswana amanda_schmelin... black dots were on the plains...is it bushes? No they're moving...cattle? We drive down closer. Herd sizes were easily in the hundreds with zebra, impalla, buffalo, hippo, elephant...oh the elephants! This was exactly a scene out of the "Lion King"! Fantastic! This whole area is fantastic and the hard work getting here certainly pays off. It's no wonder we didn't see any animals that last 3 hours or even many the day before in the Savuti ...
Chobe National Park, Botswana amanda_schmelin... from the jeep. We were a bit apprehensive but went anyway, and then we hurried as we could hear growling in the distant, scared that it was a lion, we ran back only to find that the noise was another jeep in the distance, what idiots!! lol!
We had started our tour at 16.00 and it was now 17.30 and the sun had almost set, as we hadn't seen any big cats our guide drove us to an enclosure where they had recently broght 3 lionesses, 2 of ...
... were awakened at 5 AM to be ready to leave our camp at 5:45 to start our safari at 6 AM. It was much colder in Botswana, than it is in Livingstone. Luckily they warned us of this. We were in open trucks for the safari, and yes, especially with the wind, it was cold. I was okay at first, but my hands, nose, cheecks and ears got cold then numb. I even took a blanket! Our guide was very knowledgeable about all the animals large and small. I was ...
Chobe National Park, Botswana hilaryad... to faulty towers although the car sent to pick us up from the border was one of the safari veachles with no windscreen, meaning we ended up with the blunt of the 60mph driving in our face the whole way back, and there are a lot of flies!!! and they hurt.
We had dinner at this odd little place. They claimed to be a traditional african restaurant (probably to attract tourists) but it was very cheap. They had live music (african ...
First day on the truck after my first night in a tent! Got shown how to take it down by Andy. Was a bit of a scramble trying to get it down adn find a place for ym stuff on the truck cos they never got around to showing us around the truck or how things work there. Wasnt too bad the driving, the truck was a bit bouncy at times but noting hadnt felt before. Only thing that was wrong was that the truckl managed to clip an eagle with the wing mirror, and it was ...
