Easter Island

Yippee! Easter Island! This was a place I really wanted to go to and it has certainly been worth it! We arrived at the airport to be met by a girl from the campsite who presented us with flower garlands so that was cool and we were off to a good start! We were driven to the campsite along with a German couple Siri and Andew where we all pitched our tents then went to explore Hanga Roa the islands only town. It was a pretty town and even had a few Moai, the giant stone statues built by the ori...

Isla De Pascua / Easter Island

So this entry is pretty later. But the poetry essay i am "writing" right now is even later, so i guess i will try and prioritize better next time... On October 14th, after a sleepless night trying to finish my assigned essay (late) I climbed onto a bus to Santiago with 5 kids from my program with all of our backpacks and a really heavy cooler. Yes, a cooler. Apparently, Easter Island is way the heck out there in the middle of nowhere, literally the most remote inhabited island in the world an...

Easter Island

22nd - 26th June 2008 Sorry about delay guys! Easter Island/Rapa Nui/Isla de Pascua (whatever you want to call it!) Well we decided to take a chunk out of our budget and fly to Easter Island which although it is a part of Chile its actually a 5 hour ish flight from Santiago. We landed at about 10pm at the only airport on the Island and were picked up by a guy from camping Minhoah which is where we were staying. The airport was tiny just one gate for all departures and arrivals, the guy picked...

The Navel of the World - Easter Island

Mysterious Rapa Nui, or Easter Island as its better known. The most remote inhabited place on earth, 2000km from the nearest inhabited island and 3700km from the coast of Chile. Best known for the megalithic statues of Moai found all over the island.

This was a place that we will never forget.

To start, a good luck story for a change...We had pre-booked a cheap double room online as Easter Island can be VERY expensive so we really hacked for the cheapest options - it was at a c...

At the end of the world...on Easter Island

What a weirdly amazing place! When we flew to Easter Island, we flew over the ocean for 5 hours to get there. Just ocean...nothing else. This is one of the remotest places in the world. The next closest place in Tahiti! It is surprisingly small. You can drive from one end to the other in less than 30 minutes...and then there is nothing but ocean for thousands of kilometers. On our first day we did a 9km hike from the town up to this incredible volcano crater. Its perfectly round and MASSIVE a...

The End Is Near

... they were 2 hours prior. They looked so young with Doe like eyes looking up at me as if begging for a lifeline. I had no lifeline to give. They would have to see this out until the end. I did tell them " Don't worry it is not the end of the world. You did not die, you will live to see another day. I see how nervous you are but you could have run off stage but you didn't you stayed and finished and that is ...

The Way Of The Cross

... she wanted to remember my heartbeat. With a kiss she says, “God is your friend and may He protect you all your days.” I needed no translations and could feel the tears welling in my throat as her little gnarled hands waved me goodbye. “I like your grandmother. She has a big heart.” I say to Sebastian in Spanish. “She is my life, my best friend.” He says in perfect English. I could feel the weight of ...

At Sea

... the assistant cruise director then hosted a chat session along with an Anthropologist who was traveling on the ship, entitled 'Sex in the South Pacific', the theatre was almost full to over flowing! It actually was an interesting talk/discussion with the expert giving the basic information about tribal rituals and customs, and then the audience asking questions. After a two hour break we then returned to ...

I resolve NOT to change

I woke up in the middle of the night and yawned - next thing I know, my face feels like it's on fire! I go to the bathroom and look in the mirror - holy sunburn! My face had these dark spots all over my forehead, my nose, under my eyes ... it looked like somebody deep fried my face! I figured it must have happened while sitting on the beach at Isla Damas yesterday, even though it was only for an hour or so. I've basically walked around Europe all summer ...

Smells like Chinatown

An early breakfast this morning in order to catch the tour to Islas Damas. The ham wasn't very good yesterday, so I opted for salami, instead. The cheese selection was the same, with a couple of chunks of smelly stuff, and a few slices of a better-tasting variety. And no more ****** coffee - tea is a much better choice! Of course, dirty dishwater is probably preferable to instant coffee ... The tour guide showed up and told me to ...
