... quite welcoming with flowerpots on the windowsills. A number of shops are in a circle, and you can easily wander around for 1-2 hours just looking at all the bright colored houses. Even a venture down the side street will give you a rewarding view. There isn't much else to buy except lace and the usual tourist fare.

Coming back on the vaporetti was quite the wait. I'd read about lines but didn't think they'd actually be that long considering it ...

... Lido, home of the Venice Film Festival. As the waterbus stopped at every stop, it took almost an hour to get there from Rialto, but it was a nice break from the pedestrian and tourist laden Venice proper. There are actually cars and buses on Lido, with very few canals. There's even a seawall you can walk on if you turn left after leaving the waterbus. I tried to find the beach, but as the day was ending, ended up not going as I didn't realize it was just another 5 minute ...

... to take the regular water bus to a stop nearby... I thought. After waiting forever for this bus to even arrive I had already figured we had missed the flight.

Once we got to this stop I thought was close to the airport, which it wasn't, I had realized I just led us to some random island and had no idea where to go from here. We went into a local coffee shop so I could grab a cappuccino and ask for directions while mom had to use the bathroom ...

The population is made up of 60,000 in city, 180,000 in "terraferma" (mainland) and 31,000 on other islands.

Flowing out in various directions from Grand Canal and also inwards from the sea are smaller canals which seem to provide a cul do sac for most of the tiny streets fanning out from the main piazzas.
