Torres del Paine, Feet of Pain

... business. Andreas, who has extensive trekking and mountaineering trips under his belt, almost went pro in track, and once finished a marathon with an average mile time under 5:50. Bartek and Voitek are also both serious outdoor adventure addicts, and either one or both of them used to be pro volleyball players. Then me. I read a lot of books and stuff. Again, the company could not have been more fun, but ****, I was hustling to play catch-up the whole time. Or as near ...

Hiking, Camping and Snow -- Oh My!

... and pushed through the falling snow up the side of the mountain. It was very beautiful to walk up the mountain in the snow and it wasn´t too cold, so that was nice. By the time we walked the 2.5 hours to the lookout the snow had stopped falling and we had a clear view of the Glacier to take some pictures and make little snowmen before we headed back. The walk back was slightly longer and definitely wetter as we trudged through the quickly melting snow. I found out my boots are NOT waterproof ...

Torres del Paine: Worth the pain(e).

... and cold weather, made the girls feel foolish once they removed the heavy outershells and hiked for the next 3 hrs in their longjohns.

Lunch time brought us to the first refugio (mountain shelter with full amenities), Refugio Torres. -- Which brings us to our first reflecting thoughts towards such structures. These refugios allow trekkers to hike and ¨rough it¨ without the need of carrying food, shelter, or cooking utensils. This is a bit odd as we schlepp days upon days worth of ...

Pain in Paine

... for transfer to our first base camp.

We selected an impressive spot at the bottom of a massive mountain towering right over our 'door' (we dont really have anything so sophisticated), got the tent set up and the kettle on for some soup. During this time we quickly became aware of the changeble weather here. While putting the tent up we were fighting against some seriously strong winds, followed by the all familiar patter of rain, followed by brilliant ...

Torre Del Paine - trekking the beautiful park

... drop of the snowy mountains and the lake filled with peices of galcier was incredible I would go through each day but i dont want to bore you, the camping was cool, cooking your own food on your litte stove, setting up tent with mountian, valleys and lakes as a backdrop. Torres Del Paine, campfires and the works

... us to move the things. We were so cold and tired, but still we all loved it! Character building to say the least! A lot of people gave up half way because of the weather but we kept on going until we got to near the top of the peaks. The Irish coffee in the hotel washed away the forstbite setting into my hands (now to go back a day....) On Friday we went on a bus, dingy and boat trip to go see the grey glacier which was incroyable! It was a ...

... forestation overlooking pistachio-coloured lakes. And so we set-off early to head towards this park once more, south from El Calafate, changing the border to our west into Chile and back up north to the park itself. We met with a beautiful day that allowed us some fantastic photographs of the Torres and the surrounding landscape, close-ups of grazing guanacos and overhead condors and spectacular views of the turquoise laguna Amarga. Our tour guide was a ...

... my ability to go hiking in such winds...I can hear my RBS colleague Jason Hughes telling me to stop being such a wimp ;-) Luckily, the winds blew themselves out for my first day of walking. As has been the trend so far, I was still following my parents around. They were in Torres del Paine too. It wasn´t planned, so it was a nice surprise for my dad and I to be able to walk the first 2 days of the W Hike together. The W hike is so ...
