Sandburg was apparently oriented not to material possessions but entirely to intellectual pursuits, still displayed as his mess of books and periodicals around which the rest of his life was centered. Sandburg’s wife Lillian was world champion goat breeder and established a goat dairy on the farm, an operation that is still a working part of the site. Overall the Sandburg home was quite interesting and totally different from other home tours.

... Hollow Branch. This waterfall is smaller than the others - maybe 30 feet - but it had the best water flow. A leaning tree was right in front of the waterfall making photos challenging, but I found an angle to shoot with the tree framing the falls. Then we continued hiking up the forest road another half-mile to the last waterfall on this hike. Waterfall on Southern Tributary of Log Hollow Branch is the highest of the waterfalls, but ...

... one on the right and had lunch here. Then, we climbed around and got some pictures, before heading to the other side. The water level was not that high and this one is mostly obscured by foliage. When we were finished, we made our way back to the cars and drove back to US-276 and continued north. Past the Cradle of Forestry, we turned right on Forest Service Road 1206 and then another right on FSR 476 and followed this to the end. ...

... for a day of waterfall hunting. Right at 8, we took a group shot of the entire group before breaking up into smaller groups for the day’s activities. Right after the picture, it started raining and it turned out my tent was leaking. I threw all my stuff in my car and covered it with a tarp, hoping for the best. Then we took off, heading west on US-64 to NC-215 north. It was about 20 miles to our first destination - Lower Waterfall on Sam Branch ...
