This site is not as nice as Mathews Arm just up the road. Sites not as private and smaller and not as nice. Would recommend staying at Mathews Arm if you are deciding!

A well kept campground with full time mowing crews AKA Rabbits. Also great walk in camp sites to a real camping experience.

This park was well-used and tired. We had to try two sites to get something level enough so we could even camp. Quiet and peaceful and several short hikes nearby, by car. I'd stay there again, just because the drive through the park is so beautiful.

    The plan
So the fun starts here , leaving Gettysburg we head south to Front Royal at the head of Shenandoah national park where the Skyline Drive begins. A quick stop at the Walmart super store in Fredricksburg to buy ice and additional camping equipment to see us through 7 days of tenting it. Our first camp site is Big Meadows campground but …

    Shenandoah with Fords

Visited Shenandoah at least a couple times while in Lawrenceville and Princeton but usually from Silver Spring or on vacation, the exception being a trip with the Fords in May 2003 before moving to Germany. I particularly remember climbing the Rock Scramble on this trip and it being one of our favorite trips.

We have entered what I like to call "the shin". This national park is gigantic. The land was originally owned by over 49 private land owners, now spread with hiking trails, parks and Skyline Drive with about 50 beautiful overlooks into the Appalachian Mountains. The area changes a bit demographically as in, the people are country…talk a …
