COLUMBIA GLACIER CRUISE

We took the cruise yesterday and I did indeed see a whale. A Humback, and I wish I could report that I have a picture to mark the moment but, unfortunately I was unable to push that darn button in time to catch that tail before it disappeared!
It was a perfectly beautiful day for a boat ride.....overcast and cool. We dug out our warmest coats to be prepared for the cold. As it turned out, it was very cold out on the deck and I decided to enjoy the ride mostly from the inside, going out on...

The Sea of Icebergs - Day 9

... stream (no bears). We stopped off for lunch and had the best tasting hot chocolate with marshmellows. It was raining quite hard but luckily we were really warm. Layers, loads of layers! We headed off again to Columbia Glacier and we were met with a strange and wonderful sight. The icebergs were a couple of meters high out of the water and the shapes were spectacular.

Spencer lead us in single file through ...

Will be leaving in the morning I think

... the mountain to cross Thompson's Pass and oohed and awed at the river gushing because of all the rain and were amazed at the waterfalls that we took pictures of on the way in and commented how it was gushing so much more than we had come in and that it was spraying across the road where we were driving. We both were thinking that we were glad we were pulling out of Valdez because the river was only about a foot from coming over the road and it really ...

Caught a nice halibut

... about a 3 min walk, and see how many fish have been caught and are being cleaned there. We make this round at least once a day. And we also check to see if the mechanic is working on Glen's boat. We are still waiting for the repairs to happen. This morning, we were sound asleep and heard a knock on our door. Les jumps up and Glen says, "We're going fishing" So we jump up and get dressed and fix sandwiches and then I have to run down and get our fishing license ...

Valdez - July 16-22

... there. People told us about a bear that came a couple times a day to feed on the salmon; never saw it. We did see a baby bear running through the meadow on one of the drives to Allison Point.

Drove around the town, out Blueberry Hill road and Mineral Creek road--turned around at the bridge—people we talked to said lots of cars use the bridge and continue along ...

Is it a day to kill time before debarking?

... the pieces going into the ocean were incredible. We got as close as we could, around a half a mile, and it looked like the glacier was right in front of us. The glacier is actually 1.5 miles wide and about 300 feet high and is the second largest glacier in Prince William Sound.

Not much else to report other than it was our last night on the ship and we were thinking how fast the week went by.
Bear Paw RV Campground

Went on a Glacier and wildlife Cruise to the Columbia and Mears Glacier. Also checked out a salmon spawning area. After the fish lay there eggs the fish dies. The pictures don't do the scenery justice. Ray and Christa

An Alaskan Silver lining

... moment that he noticed one of the four rods on our boat bounce in its holder... 'I think we've got one' he exclaimed and we both jumped downstairs to investigate. Sure enough, the line was being jolted slightly downwards and so we all called on the novice to land the first fish of the day. At first Kirilee looked a bit hesitant but once she got her hands on the fishing line, she managed to do the bulk of the work and landed a beautiful silver salmon. A few minutes ...

Around Valdez

... museum had some of the history of the native peoples of the area as well as the history of the town as well. The Valdez of today is not the same Valdez that existed before 1964. The town was badly damaged in the Good Friday Earthquake and tsunami in 1964 and the main part of town was moved about 6 miles away. After dinner the rain finally stopped and the sun tried ...

Day 52 Valdez

... maybe being in the USA I can plead the 5th amendment or something!) Well we spent around 1.5 hours at this spot hoping for the Big One to choose a bait, but to no avail. Dave decided to shift to where he knew we could catch some smaller fish and have some activity. Well he proved correct, the smaller fish being 20 - 45 lb Halibut, gave us a lot of fun, Mind you everyone else was taking them in and releasing anything under 25 lbs while Rick patiently waited for at least one to ...
