Valdez - simply beautiful

A beautiful drive from Palmer to Valdez along the Glenn and Ric******* highways. It was a rainy cold drive where we hit a low of 41 degrees as we passed through mountains nicknamed "little Switzerland". We drove by Horse tail and Vernal Falls and by a glacier cave over the river. We were lucky to get a campsite on the shore of the harbor entrance …

... so we climbed up to the glacier. Came back to Valdez and then went to the Valdez Museum which deals in great detail with the earthquake and tsunami of 1964 where 33 in Valdez died and 130 in all Alaska. Getting ready to catch the ferry tomorrow to Whittier.

... you don't want to get that close to the Copper River this time of year because it is so treacherous. I explained to her that I was fully aware of that fact since I had lost my brother in it 29 years ago. At that, she went over to check with the owner who told her that there was a private drive next to where we were that we could drive down to the end of and walk right up to the river. The ...

... clear and became much more scenic. Even though I take so many pictures, each one disappoints me a little. There is no way the camera can effectively catch all the different textures and colors of this amazing place. Copper Valley is well know for extreme winter sports and there are several Helicopter Skiing camps - something I would never want to try. You can also see the Alaska Pipeline in several spots. The Alaska Pipeline really ...

At the ferry terminal there was nowhere to leave luggage so I was unable to look round the town, not that there was much to see by all accounts. Walk on passengers boarded the ferry about 1.15pm prior to the vehicles, the lady who checked our boarding passes was from New Zealand, Alexandra & had been in Aussie for 20 years prior ...

    Just a bit noisy

The site is in the middle of town, so it was very convenient for walking to all the various destinations. The people were very friendly, and the facilities were clean and adequate. Our vehicle opens at the back so they were very accommodating about finding us the right site. Lots of smaller RV's seemed to be staying there so the unisex bathroom usage was quite busy. I just didn't sleep for the 2 nights that we stayed there because the noise of the traffic seemed to go on for a large part of the night... Powerful engine noise. Don't kow if it was just one particular vehicle going around and round, on that particular night, or if big engines are the general mode of transport, and cruising over the weekend a normal pastime! I don't think that the other RV sites would have been any better noise-wise as they are all in the centre of this gorgeous and historic little town.
