    Nice, but needs work

An expansive caravan park with many different types of accommodation. The park was in a natural bush environment with lots of shade. We had an ensuite site which had a huge shower and nice clean facilities. Staff were friendly and helpful, able to book our day trips from the reception area. My only criticism from a parents point of view, was the pool and playground were at opposite ends of the park, making it along walk from one thing to another for little kids. And some of the areas of the park looked a little "tired" like the place needed a bit of a tidy up.

Was somewhat disappointed in this accommodation as it presented well on the internet and is a Big 4 van site. We expected better. The worst nights sleep I have had, the fridge kept cutting in and out with a load clicking noise and running fairly noisily. The bottom of the fridge door was all rusted, did not look good at all. The room was fairly small but at least clean, the curtains had a tear in them. The air conditioner was very noisy, sounded like the bearings had gone in the motor so we turned it off.

Airlie Beach – the gateway to the world famous Whitsunday Islands and Whitehaven beach. We tried to book the 'Defender', an old tall ship, however this apparently burnt down a few years ago which was the first stumbling block to maintaining our schedule. We’d arrived on a Saturday, hoped to do the one night sail ending on Monday and be …

    Day 16 Wednesday 24 June

So today we leave Carmilla Beach. What a lovely place to stay for free even to pay for that matter. We are heading to warmer weather. We do stop at Mackay at Dan Murphy's and yes this is where we do need to start watching out for the locals as well as the crocs. As Peter sends me in yep I don't think he was brave …

A dolphin had followed us back into Townsville Port before disappearing back across the bay and we disembarked in time for lunch in town. Our destination was a relatively short three hours and just a rest stop for the night. Fuel is about half the UK price and having the van is saving us money. We're spending $80 a day - …

After arriving quite late in the afternoon to Airlie Beach the children and myself went off for our customary walk to check things out (you know jumping pillow, pool etc) while Dom gets the camp set up and we were not disappointed when we got back. I think out of all the caravan parks to date it was our best set up. It was the perfect balance …

A few days enjoying life at the beach, car service completed, time to relax. We spent just over ten days in this idyllic area, chilling out and doing nothing other than walking along beaches, catching up on rest, being real tourists. Shame about the sand flies at Airlie, this was the only thing that spoilt it, remember don't leave home without the …
