Ayers Rock - Tues 22nd April

It was an early start this morning as we made our way to the sunrise viewing platform to catch the sunrise at 07:00. After the beautiful sunrise, we had breakfast outside our tent and as we went to put some stuff in the car, a dingo ran of with our carton of milk! After we packed up, we drove to Kings Canyon. There are at least two walks you can do, the shortest is 40 mins and then the next one is 3-4 hours. As we were short on time, we did the 40 minute round trip walk to the lookout and bac...

A weekend in the country

What an amazing sight, flying over the outback, to suddenly see Uluru, Ayers Rock, rising up out of the red sand. We arrived in the Ayers Rock resort on Friday after the 2 hour flight from Adelaide to Alice Springs and then the 45min flight to Ayers Rock and made our way to the Campground, where we were staying for the weekend. Thankfully we were in the Village tents, with wooden floors and beds, rather than sleeping bags as we had heard that it got pretty cold at night. Not that we realized ...

road trip day 4 & 5 - no climbing the rock !!

middle of the desert ! The drive to Ayers Rock / Uluru takes you off the Stuart Highway and on to the Lasseter Highway. It was the first day that the driving was starting to get slightly annoying, but it could have been because we knew we had to drive back on ourselves several hours to get back to the Stuart Highway after seeing Uluru. I had already read that lots of people come across another rock / mountain before reaching Uluru and think it's it - and I have to admit when we first saw it (...

Red center tour .. sleeping under the stars!

Woken up at 5.30am by our alarm, and fumbling in the dark to get dressed and get all our stuff together, while not waking anyone else in our 8 bed dorm, we managed to be ready for our pickup at 6.20am by our tour guide. After picking everyone else up from various hostels, we were on the road and heading straight for the long drive into the red center of Uluru and Kata Tjuta (known in English as Ayres Rock and the Olges). The National Park land of Uluru and Kata Tjuta was handed back to the tr...

Ayers Rock (Uluru)

Hi di hi everybody, still valiantly trying to update all the pics from our adventures over the last few months, soooo sorry for the delay but I'm sure it's worth the wait! And then there was one...... Karen has now sadly departed Australia to return to the motherland, leaving me on my lonesome! But not to worry, there are lots more pics to put on the site which she features in. It's just not the same without you Cheese!!! We spent 2 days in Ayers Rock resort, which we have now found was ample...

Uluru

Uluru 25th August You know it's there. After seeing it on countless book covers, on the TV, or in photos, you know it's there. Somewhere, over the next sand dune perhaps, it's there. But your first sighting of Uluru still sends shivers down your back. Is it the hype? Is it the fact this sole rock, in the middle of knowhere, was probably our main thing to see in Australia? Or is it something else, something spiritual perhaps? I don't know...but it's something. It sort of jumps out on you from ...

Kata Tjuta

Kata Tjuta 26th August The National Park that Uluru stands in is called Uluru-Kata Tjuta, and the Kara Tjuta part used to go by the name of "The Olgas". Some 50km away from Uluru, you can see them clearly in the distance, a serious of odd looking shapes on the otherwise flat landscape. There are in fact 36 domes, and Kata Tjuta means "many heads". It's very rare you learn something in my travel blog, so you better be happy with that bit of information. There are two walks you can do to get a ...

Wednesday January 14th World Survivor, Day 4 After a nice cooked brekkie on the campfire it was time to leave William Creek and its flies behind - apart from the 50 or so who decided to join us in the bus. The next hour was spent squashing and swatting the slower ones, except Yasmin who had been driven to the edge of insanity and just swore and yelled 'Die!' alot. It wasn't long before we were driving through the world's largest cattle station at Anna Creek (it's one-third the size of England...

Outback Day 3

Day 3 After another long day of driving we made it to the Ayers Rock resort. When the airport at Alice Springs opened up tourism to Uluru (aka Ayers Rock) increased dramatically. This started having harmful effects on the environment so they built a resort 25 km from Uluru and they don't allow camping near Uluru. The resort is very nice, It has a good information center, a supermarket with reasonable prices, nine restaurants, a swimming pool, and tons of cabins and car parks. We took a little...

The end

Today we got up, rode our bikes for a while, and got off again at Uluru.

Poor old Mark bookended the trip by falling off early on the 2nd day, then again today just after we'd passed through the gate into the Uluru National Park. The large scab on his right elbow, by now healing nicely, was torn off, and Mark again was unhappy with life for a while. Uluru looms into view over the sandhills about 50km out, and by the time we'd reached the park we'd gotten a sense of the sheer size of th...
