Driving over 10,000 ft passes and through 9500 ft meadows could seem a bit mundane after exploring Rocky Mountain Park but it wasn't. We had a safe drive of about 180 miles southwest from Fort Collins through some really beautiful areas with 12,000 ft peaks on either side. We stopped at this state park campground south of Buena Vista Colorado and found a delightful, albeit not level campsite with views of the ...

... at our revised destination, Salida. This is the first time we have arrived at our accommodation in mid-afternoon.

A short restorative nap for David, and we were ready to walk around this delightful little town. Its ‘historic downtown’ was filled with interesting shops, and we had a meal on a terrace by the river, enjoying a local beer and a shared taco salad. Yum! And we have found the perfect coffee place for tomorrow morning.

All this happened over the 48 miles between Durango and Silverton. This is the path to cross the San Juan Mountains that was started as a toll road back in the 1880's.

... you get when you get into a hot shower after playing in a sports game in cold weather - the feeling that you've got hundreds of paper cuts that sting intensely. But this is different, it's deep tissue pain which is agonising. This morning, we woke to a frost, cooked breakfast and changed in the toilet - again - and began our ride into Del Norte as early as possible. For the first time in four days, we had a clear blue sky and stunning views of the mountains, but it ...

Today we decided to ride up to the historic town of Buena Vista and the little community of Twin Lakes which are the two largest natural lakes in Colorado. One, they aren't really very large and two they aren't is almost dry. Well, we got to Buena Vista about 11:45 with plans to go downtown and eat lunch. The road is blocked and we are detoured AWAY from the town and don't know why. We zig zag north trying to ...
