Along the way through Hodge, Helendale and Oro Grande most of the old roadside businesses have been abandoned to nature's whim except for the former Sage Brush Inn west of Helendale which has been adapted to a residence with a recreation of the inn standing alongside. I crossed the Mojave River into Victorville although like so many other southwest rivers it has a complete lack of water right now. ...

    ... light (and therefore NOT 'just up the road') was the Mountain Top Cafe sitting on a pass of its own. Inside there was a lovely 'ski lodge' type atmosphere with friendly staff, very cold beer and large portions of very reasonable dinner.

    Back at the motel, Harry spent an hour and a half in the jacuzzi and swimming pool until well past the sunset, while I typed-up the you-know-what. We had made it to here by 6pm and would have a good rest before an early start ...
