ANOTHER idyllic day of blue skies, sunshine and a few wispy white clouds to break the monotony of perfection... Having made a reservation the previous day, we arrived in central city for our punt on the Avon. Wonderfully peaceful and scenic with weeping willows waving us along. Hard work though for the young teacher who went to Melbourne and married his Japanese sweetheart before returning to his native NZ as proud progenitor... Having easily found parking close to our intended destination, w...
Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand johanneslSaturday 12th November 2005 It was raining today in Dunedin, found somewhere to park eventually and then I went to McCafe to update the travelpod whilst Andy went to download the photos onto CD and have a look around. He came back after an hour and we spent the next hour uploading photos. We stocked up at the supermarket and headed on to Mount Cook, our next destination. On the way we stopped off to see the mysterious Spherical Boulders at Moeraki, it was still high tide so most of the boulde...
Dunedin, Twizel, Mount Cook, New Zealand kateandandyI'm writing this travelog in a launderette that has e-mail while you wait for your washing - how cool is that? Anyway, our last travelog left us in Oamaru on our walk. We got quite lost as we wern't really talking and therefore not comunicating about direction etc so what should have been a pleasant couple of hours bimble turned into a mammoth hike for nearly 4 hours on an empty stomach! When we spied Stan in the distance we knew we would make it and I kissed him on his bonnet when we reached...
Christchurch, New Zealand phil_and_lisaWe drive into Hanmer Springs. It is an instantly likeable place with lots of activities available and would be a good place for a few days. We do a walk from the end of a forestry road a few km out of town up to a waterfall. It is a real calf stretcher with climbing most of the way. The waterfall itself isn't that remarkable but the walk is as it gives a good panorama of Hanmer Springs and the surrounding valley. Then we move on to Christchurch to a site 4km from the city centre. That evening...
Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand travelburnett... Canberra. Although it is thought of as a "nothing" city by many of the visitors to Australia, having nothing to offer and nothing to do, we found it to be a very beautiful city with several places of interest to visit. Of course we had not planned on visiting Canberra but we had to take a detour to leave the afore mentioned "shocker" of a camper van into a garage there. Sightseeing over we returned to the garage to be told the engine needed to be replaced(as we ...
Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand radiojohn... It was pretty fun to watch them.
We were lucky enough to get to a rugby game too. The Christchurch Crusader's vs. The Bulls (from South Africa). We got tickets 2 days before the match and still got first row. We were thinking we'd be the only ones there, considering we got front row, but it was packed. The match was so fun, the fans are amazing and so into it. It's hard to ...
... at McDonalds. It was so quiet, which was cool, I didn't really feel like dealing with rude jerks on my last day anyways. Tio, Chet, Marie, Megan, Miki, and William all came to say a final goodbye as well...aww! During the day however, I decided to do some laundry. WELL! There is a hose that goes from the washer to a sink to drain the water...someone took the hose out. I left my wash for about ten minutes, and came back to a mini flood in ...
Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand nicki_gramlich... flight. The weather I left behind me was pretty glum; at the time Queensland had been bracing for the worst as Cyclone Hamish was battering the coast and making menacing advances toward land, bringing with it a brief rain depression. I was hoping to fly into nice weather, even going as far to check the long-range weather forecast for all the places I was visiting before leaving. We we're characteristically late to arrive at Brisbane International, leaving ...
Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand krissy_ann... in the thirties its cold. Combined with this is the green landscape and the fact it is raining, seriously, we could have landed back in England. A Chinese guy runs up to us claiming $5 ride to the centre of the city with a serupticious $2 fuel charge, I absently wonder why not say $2 to the city with a $5 fuel charge. Getting into the centre of Christchurch in the rain and with my current mood is similar to being dropped off in the centre of Coventry with nowhere to stay. However, we ...
Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand adam_and_kim... Fox Glacier and after a party in the campervan we went to the pub and hooked up with the skydive crew who bought our beers hurray!!! The next day we headed for Wanaka (we didn't stop much as the sandflies are a nightmare in those parts). As we approached, the scenery around Lake Wanaka was spectacular. We arrived in Wanaka mid afternoon and as we were both still feeling a little ropey we just pulled up on the lakeside and watched the boats, windsurfers, etc until the ...
