My first impression from the island was that it was not so small like it seemed on the map. Historical Traveler Reviews Hotel Ilio Elba Island
We were seduced by the hotel before we even arrived. Owner/manager Maurizio Testa has designed one of the best websites I have ever visited. We were not disappointed. The hotel is situated in beautiful gardens, only 5 minutes walk to the pristine waters of Capo S. Andrea. We had booked a garden room which was comfortable enough (look forward to the promised updated bed) but a blue room with a balcony would be even better. The rooms are currently being redecorated so worth enquiring about newer ones. The tariff at the hotel is very reasonable for the standard of breakfast and dinner that is served. In fact, I would suggest that the breakfast, served on the balcony, excels any other I have had in many years of travel in Italy. Dinner is served in a refreshingly modern dining room with careful attention to detail. The staff are all friendly and professional, giving an excellent standard of service. Maurizio is an urbane, well-travelled host who has a genuine interest in providing a special experience for his guests. Of note too, is Daniele who hires out boats down in the cove.
When I first discovered the webpage for Hotel Ilio, the sheer beauty of it took my breath away. I wrote down the webaddress, closed the page, and then reaccessed it, hoping with a pounding heart, that it would still be there!!
We stayed a week at Hotel Ilio in August 2004. We spent a lot of time hiking , boating and scootering around and over the Island of Elba . Of the Hotel Ilio , the staff and food are superb as well as the views . This is a wonderful place . My only complaint is the room for 3 we had was about the size of our laundry room at home . It was disappointing for the $$$ , but I would consider staying there again because all other aspects are fabulous - but I will look harder next time for alternatives . As for the island - its mostly a national park so not much glitz . Its back to nature . The snokeling was widely good . I was not pleased to see the locals taking Octopi home for dinner though . The tiny water bottling factory on the cliffside road to Poggio let us fill our water bottles from the stone wier right in the mountain rocks . And we greatly enjoyed the the scooter aided climbs over a couple of Elba's peaks , to visit the tiny villages and near ancient ruins with no crowds . If finds like these matter to you then you'll like Elba .
Can't wait to go back!
Absolutely loved Elba and Hotel Ilio. Great location, walking distance to the beach, fantastic gourmet dinners, extremely friendly and personable hotel owners. Can't say enough about this retreat and I'm definitely going back!
Noting the good reviews on the hotel Ilio and impressed by their website this was where I chose to stay for our short first visit to the beautiful island of Elba. We were not disappointed. Not usually opting for halfboard, we were pleasantly surprised and delighted by the standard of food here. Each evening the menu was imaginative and varied with refreshingly tasty ingredients. The Elban wines complimented our meals beautifully and the service was friendly and efficient. The only comment I would make about the restaurant is that we would have preferred to have had the option of eating outside on the terrace. We did however enjoy the delicious breakfasts outside - my lingering memory is that of the lovely fresh figs from the garden. The tuscan bedroom was cosy and romantic, although did not entirely live up to its promise of a lovely seaview, which was minimal from the very small rather narrow balcony. Overall this is a delightful hotel in which to relax and enjoy a few days by the sea.
The most Beautiful setting for a relaxing holiday!!!!
The owners and Hosts, Anita and Maurizio made you feel right at home. Dinner was an experience
to remember....the local vinos and the most delicious local ciusines...........
A place you will always remember and want to return to
Loved the Ilio
This is probably one of the best hotels we have experienced. Normally we would shy away from half board options, but the food here is first class. The wine list is inexpensive, and offers a wide choice of Elban and Tuscan wines.
The hotel is ideally situated close to the Capo Sant'Andrea yet enjoys a quite position in easy walk of the sea.
The garden rooms (where we stayed) are large and comfortable. Fairly recent refurbishment also gives the hotel a general grand feel, and the outside garden area is superb.
We certainly intend to return as it appears many other guest have done over the years. I suppose we should keep quiet about it really....!
We discovered this hotel thanks to its beautiful website www.ilio.it. We spent our honeymoon in one of its very romatic Tuscan rooms. We were showered with lots of attentions during our stay starting with a "spumante" upon our arrival to a glass of Aleatico from Elba with very tasting dark chocolate. They also organized an unforgettable half day boat trip for us. At the end of our stay the owners Anita and Maurizio planted a typical Elban flower (the mesembriantemo, the flower of love) in the hotel's garden bearing our names.
Come back as soon as possible
I have been again a guest at Hotel Ilio. It is a place where you feel just at home. The owners Anita and Maurizio are very charming, they always give you this warm welcome and treat you as a friend, the staff is very friendly, the food is very tasty and very fresh with lots of local dishes. I stayed in one of the new Tuscan rooms which are just beautiful and most romantic. It is a place which you will not forget and where you wish to come back as soon as possible.
A wonderful, relaxing holiday
I cannot recommend this hotel too highly. The setting is stunning, the service is excellent and the cuisine is top quality. The rooms themselves are very attractively furnished and very comfortable. I felt thoroughly refreshed and relaxed after my visit. The hotel offered us a wide range of different services and even provided a guide to different walks on the island. I will recommend the hotel to all my friends and hope to return for another visit in the near future.
