Come here before it gets discovered!!

... as I could only find one public entrance... Walking through the western entrance was like stepping back in time! I'm aware that most of the city has been rebuilt - but it's been rebuilt to look like time has stood still.. (not so much because of the recent conflicts, but due to an earthquake that hit the city in the 70s).

Tourism is only starting to make it way into Kotor, from what I ...

Cool Little Castle then Mosques Everywhere

... mini floods flow through the marble streets. I have to wait 20 minutes until it subsides enough to run back to the room.

We leave for the car in a moderate rain, Chris without any rain gear. At the castle gates, I take cover and watch over the bags while Chris does a 10 minute climb to the top of the hill where the parking is located. I don't see him for 30 minutes then watch as he runs back to the castle entry to use an ATM. They don’t take credit and Chris ...

My Own Amazing Race

... until after dark and I had no idea of the bus schedule to Sarajevo.

The conductor from the bus I just got off was a kid about 12 years old and he spoke pretty decent English. He found a taxi driver who would drive me to Ulcinj for 20 Euros. I said oh hell no...for that kind of money he will drive me all the way to Podgorica. For an additional five Euros I was on my way in a early 1990s off white Mercedes 190 for the hour and a ...

We Never Found Casino Royale

... Kotor we continued on our way until we found a nice swimming spot. We lay our towel in the grass and then jumped in the cold water. On the drive back we took the car ferry which cut our drive time significantly. We were one of the last three cars to make it on the boat, squeezing our car in crooked to fit.

We had pasta for dinner and then headed into town for the evening; people watching, enjoying the ambiance, exploring ...

Race Around Montenegro

... to the top of the ruined fortress which was a steep but short climb. About 30 minutes each way. The fortress is built in such a way that is seems to cascade down over the hillside, and from the top there are absolutely amazing views over the Bay of Kotor, which they call Europe's southern-most fjord. Below, the old town is a labyrinth of cobbled streets, simple but striking stone buildings and surrounded by city walls.

What It's Like to Chill with the Most Ruthless Men

... man looked almost verbatim to Karadzic in his monks getup. I mean the way the latest news photos of Karadzic in his monk getup looks. I only became cognizant of this recently since the photos of him since his arrest have been made publicly manifest. In particular I remember the priest's large darker curl on the top of this priest's head like in the recent Karadzic photos; I wondered who would make their monks hair like that. This priest blessed me and told Darko in Serbian he could ...

An illuminated old fortress with lots of goats

After another beautiful bus ride along the coast and a very easy border crossing (I was the only one on the bus - everyone else got off at the stop right before the border), I arrived in Kotor, Montenegro. As there are no hostels in Kotor (there's only one hostel in all of Montenegro and it's only open during the summer), I knew I'd need to rely on the friendly touts greeting me at the bus station with offers of room rentals in private accommodation. I was ...

... don't think she liked it that I just kept my cool. So, while Tammy was finishing up her shower and all, I peered outside. What was this loud scary alarm being used for...we certainly weren't under attack. The bomb alarm, that clearly woke everyone in Kotor, was the cue for all the fireman. There was a fire nearby and the alarm lets all the fireman know that they are needed. It was funny, seeing all these cars scurry up to the fire ...

What is a Fjord?

... s how we wanted to remember it. So we retreated to a nearby square and sat in a cafe people watching until we had to leave. We had really enjoyed our stay in Kotor and wanted to explore more of Montenegro. The people were really friendly and eager to tell of other interesting places to visit in their country, but I couldn't figure out why they put sour cream on everything - even the spaghetti! But we had to make our way to Budapest for our flight to Sweden and to Karin and Tadek's wedding.
