... s. We took some pics and wandered the very touristy area (in amongst a very poor neighbourhood!). The buildings are so colorful because the inhabitants couldn't afford paint so they just used the leftover paint from the shipbuilding yards nearby, whatever the color.

In the evening Buenos Aires comes alive. So for dinner we headed to a local parrilla, which is a South American grill restaurant known for the fantastic steaks and Argentine meats. We BOTH ordered ...
Buenos Aires, Argentina thenahms... for our 7:30 flight back to Lima. After 3 hours in the Lima airport we flew to Buenos Aires, about a 4 hour flight. We landed at 6:45 pm local time, so we basically spent sunup to sundown in airports or airplanes. I hate that. Oh well, it can't be helped sometimes. At least we are finally back near sea level, so I'm not out of breath anytime I have to walk 2 blocks anymore.

We haven't really seen much of BA yet. We arrived at our hotel pretty late ...
Buenos Aires, Capital Federal District, Argentina derekjjensen... Don´t think I´ll do that here cos I´ve got about a months worth and I pretty much just ceebs (can´t be bothered for the parents). For example, Blue Lips by Regina Spektor was in my head on the 13 hour plane leg from Sydney to Buenos Aires. I don´t intend for every song to perfectly symbolise my trip, but simply to capture a moment, or have some kind or revelance. ¨Pictures in his mind arose/ and began to breathe¨ fitted nicely here too.
We ...
Buenos Aires, Argentina vaughanquinn... There was no sign of the earlier fire, so I guess it had been put out. The plaza is the main spot for various protesters to hang out, and that day was no exception. Notably, the Mothers of the Disappeared held their weekly vigil, which they have been doing every Thursday like clockwork for the past three decades, fighting to learn the fate of the approximately 30,000 people who "disappeared" during the Argentinian military dictatorship of 1976-1983. They gathered and set up a ...
Buenos Aires, Argentina segacs... ultra-modern city. After checking out the market, the two of us made it by Subte and taxi over to the airport. "Wait, but you said you were going to the futbol match?" Correct, we had to go to the airport to physically pay for our airplane tickets the following morning, despite making a booking online. It is moments like these that are reminders we were still traveling in a non-developed country. I would be reminded of ...
Buenos Aires, Capital Federal District, Argentina chiapoe... skinnier that day. After a cramped, but free, night in a stuffy dorm room, we packed up and caught another bus, this one heading out of Argentina, through the Andes mountain range, into Santiago. We managed second row, top, seats for the captivating 7 hour ride. Our bus snaked its way up through towering red, arid, jagged peaks along rushing rivers to the border, and then down countless steep switchbacks into the valleys of Chile.
Buenos Aires, Argentina chadsteph... 75 degrees cool..), which is nice. Classes are going well.. we learned how to insult each other yesterday which is terrifically useful, and I try to use Spanish as often as possible. Volunteering is really fun, too.. all the kids are great, and it's also a great opportunity to practice speaking Spanish. The L.I.F.E. organization is headed on a trip next week to Missiones, where they will be visiting an indigenous village and heading to Iguazu Falls. It's a monthly trip so I ...
Buenos Aires, Argentina mmarshall... in Recoleta, probably the smartest neighbourhood in the city, to visit the Cementerio de la Recoleta and see Evita's grave (her body was returned to her family in the early 1970s). The sarchophagus is very unassuming down a narrow walkway within the high walled cemetary, it was much smaller than we had imagined. The face of the sarcophagus is adorned with flowers and people huddle to look in. Recoleta is worth a good stroll, it is full of ...
Buenos Aires, Capital Federal District, Argentina jamesandjulie... fireworks at midnight and finally met up with our mates in a beach bar through until sunrise. The first sunrise of 2009 over the water really was the most beautiful one we have ever seen- see the photos- it was magical. Body clock back to normal we managed to get the last 4 places on the bus out of Las Grutas to Bariloche (we were once again travelling with Karl and Liz, our inseparable travel mates who had been with us about 2 months now)
Buenos Aires, Argentina redstar27... a comparatively normally life for a while so we hold back on the sightseeing for a while in favor of just wandering the streets and getting a feel for the city. The Sunday after we arrive we take a walk through the deserted streets to Recoleta which takes us about 20Min's. We have a look around the Design Centre and continue our quest of visiting the Hard Rock Café in each country we visit. This one was a an absolute disaster. After three attempts get our food ...
