not far from the city centre is smaller regions called alcantara and belem (bethleham). aside from ancient famous recipes for pastries, they also have great boardwalks, famous towers, presidential palaces, huge monasteries and just when the comparisons ...

This tower used to be further out in the water, now it is real close to land. Guess the water level dropped quite a bit. All of the explorers used to stop here.

The Monastery of St Jerome. It has the tomb of one of the explorers - Vasco de Gama. It also has a well preserved cloister area (see next entry).
