Most alien island on Earth: Socotra

September 10, 2008 1:34 pm

I’ve seen these photos from various sources, but this is the most comprehensive collection that I’ve seen so far.

Socotra Island is just off the coast of Yemen and Somalia in the Arabian Sea. It has been separated from mainland Africa for more than 6 million years, so life on the island has evolved quite differently. If suddenly woke up here and didn’t know this was someplace on Earth, you’d most certainly think you woke up on Mars.

Find more photos at Dark Roasted Blend, they’re just breathtaking and unbelievable.

If you want to actually visit Socotra Island, there are about two or three flights departing weekly with Yemen Airways from Aden or Sana’a.

What’s the weirdest living thing you’ve ever seen? Does it compare to the plants and animals living on Socotra Island?

Tell us about it in the TravelPod travel forums,
