On the road again
We hired a car and drove from Queenstown to Glenorchy today. The scenery was amazing. The trees were just starting to change into their autumn colours and the reflections on the lake were lovely. We took some photos and had a yummy lunch at Foxy's cafe and enjoyed sitting in the garden. I had a crisply BLAT. It was so delicious and the bacon was so …
Spectacular Scenery!
Shar:
This morning was a bit rainy and the sky looked full of clouds so we didn't know what to expect. We joined everyone again in the shelter for breakfast and then headed out.
As seems to be the case every morning, the clouds were present, high and covering the tops of the peaks. But the rain stopped and it seemed like we might …
Christmas in the Fiordlands
If someone told me I would be in New Zealand for New Years 2012 I would have laughed in their face. Yet here we are day two of 2012. Day two and we are about to embark on yet another tramp into the Fiordlands, The Kepler Track. I believe it will be our last in New Zealand as our time here is quickly coming to an end. January 16th we …
S Island Day 8: And So Begins The Adrenalin
Yeah so it was raining in Wanaka again and the skydive was cancelled and the thought of another day wandering round a maze didn't really appeal to us so we headed down to Queenstown to have a little chat with them about stuffs and things to do in the area, namely where we could get this throwing ourselves out of an aircraft at 15000ft thing out of …
Lagoon Walk
On the end of one of the zigzag arms of Lake Wakatipu lies Glenorchy, a tiny little town at the end of the road. Yes it really is a dead end road, you can drive there from Queenstown but thatīs where it ends and the only way is back. That alone gives me this end-of-the-world feeling ;-)
The drive though is truly beautiful with great lake …
Paradise
I hauled my bags off the Info & Track bus and wandered through the tiny village of Glenorchy to the Trading Post to meet my host ready for the transfer over the water to Kinloch.
The village has 200 people and 400 horses, it's called a Township and was settled by early gold-diggers, its now mostly sheep and cattle rearing, and tourism, …
To the left, to the left...
Today I took the wheel. Until now Jym has been doing all the driving. Not only did I do well but I actually felt comfortable driving on the left (I cannot say the same for Jym's comfort level with me driving…he closed his eyes and was chanting mantras to himself) He even said Li was laying on the floor of the back seat with his flippers over …
Glenorchy and Bengoblin
Jack: We spent the morning in Queenstown. We spent a small fortune on merino wool and possum products then changed our flights to take into account the holiday extension. We used Air NZ to make the changes because they wanted to charge less NZ$ than Virgin wanted to charge in AUS$. I left my glasses at the internet cafe. Then we went up the gondola …
Off the beaten trail
Twenty minutes out of Queenstown, we stopped at the historic Kawarau Bridge, built to accommodate the rush of gold miners at the end of the 19th century, and preserved mostly because it's the place where A.J. Hackett invented bungy jumping. The resulting funds paid for a glitzy facility here, and restored the bridge to near perfect condition, with …
Camping xtrem!!!
Nun haben wir den Caples-Greenstone-Trek in Angriff genommen... Also losgewandert und ueberall ueber Kuh-Scheisse gestolpert - naja, nich gerade soo toll. Dann nach 5 Stunden und 11 km unsere erste Huette erreicht. Da passen 16 Personen rein, am Abend waren es aber ueber 30 Personen, die teilweise aufm Boden schlafen mussten. Haben dann mit soner …
