SE Asia's highest mountain

Mount Kinabalu is the highest mountain in southeast Asia. It has a deep, spiritual history with the local people, believing that the spirits of dead people live at the top. I didnt see any spirits, but it was impressive hiking through the jungle foliage at the base up to the sub-alpine vegetation, then above the tree line onto exposed granite.

So the day finally arrived. Two days after booking our permit and hiring a guide, we woke up at 6am and checked outside to make sure it wasn't raining. We were in luck! The skies were clear and Mount Kinabalu – the highest mountain in SE Asia at 4095m – was fully visible for the first time since we have been here.

I could write an essay about how this ranks as the most challenging and most rewarding thing I've ever done.

The summit sunrise? Mind blowing. Stunning.

Everyone of us who made it up there? Legends. And those who turned back, still a feat to make it to Laban Rata or just above the check point.
