Sunday already, and another early start! We were booked onto the first trip over to famous 'Alcatraz' for a tour and to see what one of the most notorious high security prisons used to be like. Down to PIer 33 for the ferry, we stepped on board and started the 20minute sail across to the island.  Alcatraz means 'pelican' in Spanish and refers to the first inhabitants of the island. It lies 3 miles east of the Golden Gate, it's location both strategic and ...

... Pacific highway before we knew it and were making our way to half moon bay. This destination was only an hour outside San Francisco but it was our last night in the countryside. The journey took us along the coast, a view that we both could not get bored of. It only took 2 hours and we had arrived at our last stop. Time to go over the famous bridge and once over the other side of the bay, visit Sausalito and Muir woods. Helen braved driving the exchange car on the "wrong side" of the road. The car is a Toyota Hybrid that we saw being manufactured in Japan. Nia enjoyed watching the information panel in the dashboard. It was little misty going over the bridge but by the time ...

So determined to give the tour justice we hopped on again the next day. Little did we know that it was Presidents' Day weekend and that the increased traffic on the roads would turn a two hour ...

... by actual inmates and guards from the prison. It was really interesting hearing about the escape attempts, and learning about people like Al Copone and the Birdman. Really bizarrely we were in the gift shop, and there was an old man signing books. It turned out he was an actual Alcatraz inmate from the late 50s/early 60s. How odd would that be? We then made our way back to the mainland and spent a nice afternoon travelling on some of the cable car ...
