The Garden City

Well - it's been a while, and there's a bit of theme of the good old weather disrupting things running through this update. Not to say of course that we haven't been very much still enjoying ourselves, just not in the ways we originally planned!
First up, we thought we were finally in for a real
treat as we left 4 solid days of rain in Queenstown and headed north
for a stopover night in Wanaka. Literally 10 minutes out of there and
the sun was back out and stayed with us for most ...

Reflections on New Zealand

3 million deer, 4.5 million people, 9 million cows, 50 million sheep and 90(!) million possums all wrapped up in one amazing country. New Zealand has been everything we'd hoped it was going to be and a whole lot more. The comments and complaints about the weather have proably been more frequent than merited and the climate has probably been not too far from expected overall. Lack of stiff upper lip on my part probably mixed with a propensity for boredom if I'm not fully occupied all the time!...

South Island Adventure!

... at the Blue Duck, which being the only café for about 119 km, charged the most outrageous prices. For fish and chips it was 27 NZD. But when you’re in the middle of nowhere you have to eat..

Since there is absolutely nothing to do in the fiord, we all played Cluedo (the NZ version of Clue) and watched LOTR until we were tired enough to fall asleep.

It was an early morning, like usual; the weather was rainy with millions of black flies (a.k.a. sandflies). The ...

... song –
“bad words” included – even in “family friendly”
establishments. Many times we've heard several rap and rock songs and
are amazed that certain parts aren't edited out. It's also pretty
crazy at 7:00 in the morning to hear “I got my 9 mm and my b**h and
I'm ridin' high” and to see people getting their coffee, reading
their paper, and starting ...

Harleynut Tackles The Big White Cloudy Campervan

... 20km north to the Otto/MacDonalds DOC site. We picked an open area in the carpark near the river and parked two wagon close for wind protection. This turned out to be another excellent camper site. We held round two for cocktail "hour" and the midgies weren't invited. We only had a couple of random winged gatecrashers and partied well into the night. The rain held off for the night and it would have been memorable if I could remember it through the Bourbon & Tequila haze.  Sorry ...

... whose starter motor has broken! 'here, have these guys number', i say, passing them the number for our pommy loving mechanics! bet, they'd love the extra work! a little further down the road on our first drive up to alice, we stop at the stuart's well camel farm to make friends with the dozens of characterful camels they have on site and for a quick, $5 camel ride around the yard! and surprisingly, they're more comfortable to ride around on than you might think! unfortunately for ...

The International Antarctic Centre

... Are you nuts?! It went down to - 18.3 and there was a wind speed of 43.4 km/h. Of course they gave us jackets (and little rubber booties). Then we headed over to the penguin pool for feeding time. In the pool they had little blue penguins. The penguins were very cute. The only penguins that come to them are the ones that get injured or sick and they stay with them for life, unless they can be released. We looked ...

Day 43 - Wellington to Christchurch

... third of the price in dollars. Bought some postcards so that we could send some from each place we visit whilst in New Zealand and had a look around the town. We were going to go on the trams but it was about $15 and most of the places were closed or closing, so we just walked around to the art museum instead. Took a few photo's in the museum and even of some of the pieces which we probably weren ...

Note to oneself... must come back here one day.... Unfortunately our ticket didn't allow any time to stay here in New Zeland for any length of time and we were just here for a connecting flight to the Cook Islands. However, flying over the south ...
