... around St Joseph township and taking the smaller roads home. Bought some Halloween pumpkins for Madge's front steps from Sid's Pumpkin patch. We also stopped at Niles to see an old station which has been used in a number of films including Only the Lonely, Continental Divide and Midnight Run.

Went to dinner at Madge's favourite Chinese restaurant, Mandarin House, where we had a lovely meal of beef Chow Mien, Moo Chu Pork and Szchezwan Chicken with peanuts.

... drive into town and go about their Saturday tasks. At the shop, there was one long wall containing bolts of plain coloured fabrics with every shade within the colours of the rainbow. The Amish women mostly wore very conservatively styled dresses of one solid colour but the colours were not muted. They were bright - green, purple, orange, red, blue. I saw one lady wearing floral but it was a muted Liberty style tone.

Started with another foggy morning. 46 F. Off on the road at a little after 8.30 and headed for Starved Rock State Park. The fog was still over the Illinois River at the park when we arrived at the rock. We could just make out the lock on the other side of the river. It is a big park with a very big parking area which gradually filled. We stayed there about 2 hours. Walked to Aurora Canyon which did not have any water ...

Oct.10th

We left Dummerston and took a scenic highway. The hills were finally showing some of the famous color we were told about. We stopped at a high viewpoint on Hogback Mountain and we could see the colorful hills stretching off for miles. We were so glad we took the slow scenic route today. In a few days we'll start to travel further and take the interstate highways. After a bit of shopping we spent the night ...

... some of church and afterward met some people who were excited to be moving to Snowflake, Arizona. This was their last week in Lake Villa, IL and they seemed like they couldn’t be happier. They were excited about moving away from the winters - 50" of snow last year made their decision easier.
