The Bay of Islands

... us do fudge tasting (we never did find another place that would let us do cheese tasting, though). One afternoon we took a ferry boat across to a quaint little town called Russell ("romantic Russell" as it's advertised) that would fit in seamlessly on Cape Cod. Our nights were spent on the hotel patio drinking white port and staring skyward at the upside-down constellations. Reading: Notes From An Even Smaller Island by Dean Humphreys

The Northland

... of today's NZ (not the birthplace of Maori culture). On Feb. 6, 1840 most of the local Maori tribes signed the Waitangi treaty with the British. It is treated somewhat like our Constitution, but it has been quite contested over the years because the two sides interpret it differently (mostly related to land rights). John, KeriKeri is a nice town full of retirees and hospice workers. The summer population ballons due to everyone wanting out of ...

More Fish & Chips!

... windy etc. * Went to Museum (culture: tick) * Went for Walk (Scenic: tick) * Town is very small, used to be Capital but I think things have gone down hill since then. * Got ferry back. * Had more fish and chips for dinner ( I KNOW! but the fish here is really good and I never eat fish & chips at home because of the cod stocks - so shhhh!, I ate it on the beach in the sun and it was good ...

Screw the Man, Embrace the Tan

... his wife from his presence in a 30km/hr car chase because he was turbo drunk and I didnt want him to crash. At least not into someone else. She was living in a campground with my brother and my mule Kyle and I brought her to the police as she asked. He decided he would have me killed. He also stole all his wifes clothes, put them in a pile on the ground, and shat on them. I assume he studied at the London School of Fine Arts. I took this all as useless threats until 6 ...

How to Kill a Fish in the Face

... shoes are large, but let us not infer much because of this. We must be truthful. This is no John Holmes we consider, yet no Wee Willy Winky either. He wears sandals often, but prefers his expensive Vasque boots, they are comfortable, with a hard unforgiving sole. When he puts these boots on a quote from George Orwell's book 1984 often comes to mind. "...a boot stamping on a human face. Forever." Despite the grimness of that he has an easy smile and a penchant for ...

Bay of Islands Trip

... really shouldn't be off the coast of New Zealand. So I got to see some very colourful sealife, but the diving expereince itself was a little upset by having to put a 7mm thick wetcuit on and strap 14kgs round my waist in order to counter the wetsuits bouyancy! Could barely move! And the water was cold. No sharks though! Overall, an average experience. Met Sally back at the YHA and we drove back to Auckland to out little city centre flat. (only about 3.5 hours this time!)

Kerikeri

... on Waipapa road. It sounded like it could be neat, but it turned out to be really cool: in addition to the kaleidoscopes you're used to, there are 'dancing' kaleidoscopes with objects bouncing around on a speaker, and (we think coolest of all) bubble kaleidoscopes, where you see ever-changing colors refracted by the film of a soap bubble. Psychedelic! The area also plays host to several wineries, two of which we visited. First was Cottle Hill ...

On the Road Again

... I really start to look forward to seeing those rumble strips, Al starts to look forward to construction zones so that we get to slow down. On these narrow twisty roads the speed limit is usually 100 k. There are lots of passing lanes, but they usually only last about 200 meters so when a car passes you it really cuts you off to get back into your lane before the passing lane runs out. We are amazed at how close they come to our bumper ...
