We spent 5 hours driving from Hanmer Springs via Lewis Pass to Blenheim. Very dry. Saw sheep, cattle, a llama and a goat. Stopped at a small waterfall and noticed that now the rivers are flowing to the east. Lots of bicycle riders who hogged the middle of the road were annoying.

Rylands Estate is very peaceful. They grow stone fruit and are surrounded by vineyards. Unfortunately, the cherries were finished. We did taste some red peaches, ...

... including various Vauxhall models which were clearly of interest. They were piled two high in an old Kiwi fruit factory and eccentric would hardly describe the owner and collector. Previously a mechanic and clearly an only son and batchelor he had shrines to both parents, some rather lewd jokes laid out in one section as well as some home made mannequins dressed as mechanics! All most peculiar! Still Rod enjoyed the trip down car memory lane among the four hundred or so ...

... across a few hen parties and a couple from Christchurch. Had coffee at Gielson but could only fit us in on an armchair in the corner, great people watching! Villa Maria we met a lovely women who told us the sparkling wine is called Elstree after the town in the UK. Had a snack at Cloudy Bay and St Claire tasted cheese from a girl from Yorkshire.

After watching Love Actually with 200 advert breaks it was a leisurely start to Christmas morning. Light breakfast followed by present opening on the deck. Our hosts surprised us with a bottle of wine, box of cherries from their orchard and truffles.
