    Before Rte 550 was put through this place was about as remote as you could get get. Without a drivable road the only viable way to Silverton was through Durango by train...the same train we rode.     ... thru the snow and up the mountain. Now rentals are usually driven by first timers. Guessing this guy got quite a treat and a great story to tell. I pulled over and put it back in 4 wheel drive and we preceded down the mountain. SNOW IN AUGUST! From the pictures you can't tell that 4wd is needed but I guarantee you would not get from 7000 feet to 11,000 feet on this road without it. It was great fun! We drove right along the edge of great drop offs on a single lane around curves. ...
