Welcome to WWOOFing and sandboarding!

... day and a particularly sore bum we all eventually managed it and with the exception of a nasty fly through the air which resulted in landing on her head on Isabel's part it turned into a very successful venture! We had an amazing afternoon messing around on the giant sandunes and so it was 4 very tired but satisfied WWOOFers who climbed back into the car and headed up to Cape Reinga - the most northerly point in New Zealand to catch the end of the sunset and watch ...

... holidays. But as we've found out so far, crowded in New Zealand is not really that crowded considering the population of the whole country is about the same as Sydney, Aus. While we were there, we took the ferry over to the small historic town of Russell, which is on an island across the bay. This area has historical significance because it's the site where Caption Cook first ...

Waiting in Kerikeri

... 4 a go. Though the work is not actually picking fruit it picking Kiwi Fruit flowers but it in the fruit industry. My friend arrives in January and then I'll go back to step 3 seriously again. It appeals to me to stop and do a job that I don't care about and have no emotional attachment to, so I'm going to work hard but if I don't want to anymore I just won't, I will though be mortified if they don't want me.

... around by a speed boat - arm straining fun! * Sailed back, sun came out. * Went for fish & chips with guys (I know I'm getting fat) and then after a short break went to pub quiz. * We didn't win * Went home early, good day, just felt a bit rough. Why we didn't win pub quiz: Reason A: We didn't know all the answers. Reason B: They had these bonus round that involved doing stupid things for points. One was to swap your clothes with a member ...

L Armstrong???

... yesterday afternoon to consider my activity options, only to wake up four hours later, too late to participate in anything. The kip did me some good however and I felt full of the proverbial this morning, wasting no time in hiring a bike and peddling off to explore the local area. The first gentle incline revealed that I am probably nearer to Louis, rather than Lance, Armstrong in terms of fitness but at the end of the day I do have all the time in the world so no worries I guess...

On top of the world! Well ok, NZ anyway!

... However, I felt a bit vulnerable parked up, so carried on. Eventually I found a little store in Te Kao and bought some supplies. Thank god for Red Bull!!!! I soon perked up!! I bought some fruit too, which was soooo lovely, I'd missed fruit! :) The ladies in there were so sweet and lovely to me. I was now able to enjoy the drive up to the Cape. The last 20km was gravel track with some heavy construction works going on. They are sealing the last stretch of road up to the ...

Working in New Zealand

We left Auckland in search of work in the northland. The plan was to head north to where the Fruit picking season was beginning. We decided on Kerikeri as this is the fruit picking capital of the northland. It's a small town but nice all the same. We arrived in Kerikeri on 8th April, applied at the local supermarket on the 9th, had an interview on 10th and began work on the 14th - not bad eh? I'm now a fully fledged member of New World's Deli ...

Bay of Islands Trip

... a 7 hour drive back south (we took a different route for most of it thank christ!) to Whangarei (pronounced Fangarei) where we'd booked into the YHA there. Probably the worst YHA we've visited so far. I was off diving the Poor Knights Islands the next day. After a half decent sleep, I was picked up and got to dive for the first time in 3 months. At the poor Knights there is a current that stretches all the way doen from Australia and brings with it all kinds of life ...

On the Road Again

... go. Imagine my surprise when I hear a very New Zealand accent coming from the GPS - what on earth is she saying! Our biggest challenge is to get across the Harbour Bridge, after that everything should be easy, or so we think. We start off on pretty nice roads, with well marked signage and start to breathe a little easier. This lasts for only a short while. Soon we are on twisty roads, so narrow that two cars can hardly pass (maybe we ...
