Again, the colors were beautiful along the way, but not in full color yet. We are a few weeks early, but are enjoying them nonetheless. Travel 30 miles down the Skyline Drive Road to Big Meadows campground. It is an older campground than Mathews Arm and not as nice. The campsites are more open and not as large. Hard to find a site to fit a 32 foot Motorhome! The one thing this campground has are showers which we dont use. We settle in and read for the afternoon then walk around the campground!
It gets windy and cold later so no fire tonight. Rains in the night!
... waterfall that is dry! Now we have to go UP 1000 feet. A good workout this 2 hour hike! Back in the campsite and they are not kidding as we soon have a yearling bear and several deer walk right past us! They have to bring in Bear Bangers (noise makers like a shotgun) when a Mother bear and 2 cubs comes into the campground which if FULL of tenters with kids! Have a nice fire.
... invited to go kayaking with Joan and her friends Liz and Boz. We hired our gear from Watermelon park and they dropped us off 8 miles up the Shenandoah river. It was a beautiful day on the water, say some great birdlife along the way and enoyed the paddle. The water was flowing our way so it wasn't all that tough (8miles sounds long for what we did!)
Emily took us to the Sky Meadow State park for a bit of a hike another day. ...

A last ditch attempt on the way home, we decided to stop and test drive the old green van outside someones house. We jumped in and headed out the road....and once again just laughed. It was perfect! Felt great from the minute we sat in ...
