Historical Traveler Reviews Topside Inn Boothbay Harbor
Stunning views and friendly welcome - top marks for Topside!
We stayed at Topside on our second visit to Boothbay Harbor just as the town was waking up from its' winter slumber and preparing for the onslaught of Memorial day weekend. Last year we stayed at the Boothbay Harbor Inn (great location, but a lousy hotel!), and we fell in love with the town and wanted to come back. While there we spied Topside on its "top of the hill" vantage point and we were also impressed by the location of the Spruce Point Inn. When it came to planning this year's vacation we contacted both the Topside and the Spruce Point Inn by email to get price and availability info. Depsite the fact Topside was closed for the winter and the owners were abroad we heard straight back from them on the same day ....we are still waiting to hear from Spruce Point!
We really can't fault Topside. The house is beautifully furnished and kept immaculately clean. Our room had stunning views and was very comfortable. Brian and Ed were the perfect hosts - even helping us out when we needed to find a bar showing soccer to watch the Champions' League final! The breakfasts were fabulous - the homemade granola and blueberry pancakes are to die for! The only downside was the weather, but we've got our fingers crossed for next year when we will definitely be returning to Topside.
Best view, great hosts, ideal location
My husband and I just returned from a wonderful weekend in Boothbay at the Topside Inn. I researched all the inns and B&Bs on TripAdvisor before I made reservations and was interested to see them when we arrived in Boothbay.
We thought Topside had the best location and view. We stayed in room 14 and could not ask for a better view from our window and porch. Both the main house and guest houses were nicely decorated, very clean, and well maintained. Our hosts, Brian and Ed could not have been better. They were very informative, friendly and welcoming. Breakfasts were excellent.
We also considered staying at Spruce Point Inn resort. Although its a beautiful resort, my recommendation would be to stay at Topside and visit Sprice Point for a drink, dinner or to walk the property. You'll save some money and you'll thoroughly enjoy being in Boothbay Harbor and your location at Topside.
Topside is Tops!
We recently stayed at the Topside Inn for one night only - and wished we had booked for longer.
The Guest House has the best vantage point in Boothbay, and Room 4 has the best view - we arrived just in time for a wonderful sunset. The breakfast was top class and both Brian and Ed were very welcoming.
Although it was mid October and quite a few shops and restaurants were already closed there were still enough places open to keep us happy - The Daily Catch does fantastic lobster - and we also picked up some bargains from shops just about to close for the season.
I would highly recommend Boothbay, and especially the Topside, to anyone considering a visit to Maine.
Top Notch Topside
Our family of four stayed at the Topside Inn in July 2004 for four nights. Everything was just as we imagined a New England Inn would be from the sumptuous breakfasts and the scenic surroundings to the friendly atmosphere and warm hospitality.
Romantic B&B in heart of Boothbay Harbor
Completely agree with the review below. In fact, we are the couple next door that got engaged. Incredible pet-friendly, comfortable B&B with plenty of room. Romantic charm that made our engagement weekend unforgetable. Property was beutiful and well manicured. Inn owners were incredibly hospitable and made you feel very welcome down to the home cooked breakfast. Our yellow lab pup had a great time too. Great place to vacation for dog owner's. The whole town was pet-friendly. We'll def. back back. If you decide to go, try the lobister bisque at the Tug Boat restaurant. INCREDIBLE!
Great Pet-friendly Inn in a pet-friendly town
July 2, 2004 - Topside is a bed and breakfast that stands at the top of the only hill that overlooks the harbor. The Inn was pet-friendly with two nicely decorated rooms that cater to pet owners, rooms 19 & 20. You can ask for the rooms by number. We had friendly nextdoor neighbors (in the other pet-friendly room) who brought a 6 month old golden retriever. Chica, our puppy, had fun playing with the golden in the large lawn in front of our room. The Inn owners came out and chatted with all of us while the dogs played. As proof of the romantic nature of Topside and the surrounding area, our neighbors actually became engaged that night! The Inn was really in the best location too, within walking distance of everything: the Thistle Inn and Port of Italy (two places where we ate dinner and also highly recommended, in fact it was Topside that recommended them!), the boat tours, and the downtown shopping area. The breakfast in the morning was a delicious homemade stroudle. The town itself was very pet-friendly as well, they even let our dog come along for our two hour boat tour of the harbor. Staying at this pet-friendly BnB in the center of a pet-friendly cozy main harbor town really made our stay perfect! In low traffic, we made it up from West Boston in less than 3 hours, and we are already trying to figure out when we will go back and stay at the Topside.
An outstanding place to stay
We just returned from a delightful 3 night stay at Topside Inn. Brian and Ed are wonderful hosts and the accommodations were extremely comfortable. Stay in room 4 on the second floor. A great ocean view, super comfortable bed and a very spacious bathroom. The breakfasts were very good. Hosts, Brian and Ed were most helpful and accommodating. Without question, we would stay at Topside Inn again.
Loved it adored it told everyone about it!
This lovely Inn resides as if floating above the harbor with views that boggle the mind. In the main house there is a library for reading and the owners place the daily newspapers there for your perusal. There is a massive expanse of front lawn with deck chairs and you can sit and read while you enjoy the view. Our room was one of the older ones in the Outbuilding, a dog room (as we had a small dog with us), and the management handled that wonderfully. We had a fridge in the room and breakfast everymorning was free at the main house. The dining room was pleasant and the company lovely. We walked to the local shops and restaurants such as "No Anchovies" a fantastic Italian restaurant. The fridge came in very handy. The bed was a KING and very comfortable. Tea and Coffee as well as hot chocolate were available at all times-a must for my English blood. The breakfast served in the morning consisted of fresh fruit, breads, blueberry pancakes, or eggs and egg concoctions.
There were assorted breakfast cereals as well. The stunning part of this Inn are the yellow southern pine high polyurethane floors polished until they gleamed. There is a large porch with chairs and tables to sit and sip your tea whilst you glance over the harbor. Next time I would stay in the main house, although being in the Outbuilding afforded a privacy that means quite a bit to me. Give it a try! It is lovely and worth the stop!
A Great Stay
A beautiful view from a well appointed inn. A very restful place to spend a few days above the harbor hubbub.
Cosiest Innin New England
Cosy atmosphere, warm welcome and fantastic views made Topside an easy choice. Stay in the main house if you can and admire the views on a clear day or snuggle up when the storms come in. Don't expect TV - just enjoy the experience and the Home cooked breakfast
