We got away nice and early so we could get to Sicily at a good time. Stopped at a bar next to a petrol station for a brioche and coffee then continued our way along the coast. The coast had now become a little more ugly with lots of rubbish and run down houses/hotels and there were no more cliffs. Erice's Norman-style influences are reflected in its imposing towers and fortifications. During our walking tour, we see the walls that stretch from Porta Spada to Porta Trapani, and protect the only side of the hill with no natural defenses. Dogs bark and a cockerel crows to wake us early. From our distance, we can't see the previous night's fire damage but the acrid scent of singed ground is on the air. Terre di Himera is smack in the middle of the countryside but it's too far to walk to the Madonie park and its pretty hill villages.
